how to get to and around Kyoto?

by konniemario

It's my first trip to Kyoto. Want to ask
-how to go to Kyoto as we're arriving via Osaka airport? Most say to do the Bullet Train. But not sure which line to take, which station to go to and which station to get off
- Is it better to stay near Kyoto city center or near Kyoto station?
- What is the best way to get around in Kyoto? Bus? Is it possible to do so if I don't speak Japanese?
- Any other tips you can share?

I visited Kyoto in December 2005, travelling by bullet train from Tokyo, but the line runs on to Osaka, so you should be able to get a direct bullet train. The train was superfast, and expensive, around £150 for the round trip, but well worth it. From Tokyo it loops around Mt Fuji.

I stayed in a ryokan in the central area. north of the food market. Found it in the Lonely Planet guide. It had a small house in the garden, with traditional bath and sunken tables.

The railway station is quite away out from the central areas, but there is a subway. Also buses are good, with numbers and announcements in English.

I do not speak any Japanese, and managed fairly well. The food market is amazing, as are the many temples and the castle. The food is amazing.

Hi

In Kyoto there is a small subway system that you can use. But we also walked quite a bit and we also rented bikes for a day to get around faster. I have posted a trip report with pictures from Japan on my homepage http://gardkarlsen.com. Maybe you can find some useful information there :-)

I think I answer both of these questions on my Japan and Kyoto pages. I was there in April and thouroughly enjoyed it, and I only know about 5 words in Japanese.

Do you mean OSAKA AIRPORT is KANSAI AIRPORT(KIX)?
You can go to KYOTO directly from KIX by Express called HARUKA, which will be 75 min, 3000yen (one way). More than 2 trains an hour the express depart KIX. It is easy to find railway station(JR line) at KIX. In case you get lost at the airport, you dont have to be worry. If you ask someone you want to go to KYOTO by JR, then most Japanese people will take you the station certainly.
If you mean OSAKA AIRPORT is ITAMI AIRPORT, I recommend you to go to Kyoto by Airport Bus directly, which takes about 1 hour, departing every 30 min.

Manicured Temple Grounds

by giampiero6

The temple grounds are quite beautiful and well kept. I was particularly fond of the delicate and fresh greenery...moss, maples, pines. You'll see women placidly sweeping the moss to keep leaves off of it. Being from a dry mediterranean climate in LA, the greenery was stunning and very peaceful. I admired the attentive, care that was lavished on natural details.

Traveling in low budget

by musicinme about Shop around in the suburbs

If you are traveling in low budget and want to taste some japaness food, don't eat in the downtown. You always can find some good deals while you're exploring the suburbs. The quality. the quantity and the price will surprise you.

Ginkakuji

by elcbw

Ginkakuji, the Silver Pavilion, is a Zen temple at the foot of Kyoto's Higashiyama ("eastern mountains"). The temple is formally known as Tozan Jishoji.

In 1482, shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa built his retirement villa on the grounds of today's temple. A few years later, the Silver Pavilion, modeled after Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion), was constructed. Plans to cover the pavilion in silver were never realized.

The villa was converted into a Zen temple after Yoshimasa's death in 1490.
