Another weather question

by terrys123

I am sorry to post yet another weather question, but we are planning our holiday to Kyoto/Osaka next year. We have the choice of last two weeks in April or begining of August. I love my photography and hate the RAIN! I suspect we will have missed the cherry blossom but there is so much else to photograph. Its impossible to predict but is end April a good or bad time for rain or do we go in August and put up with the heat.
Again please forgive another weather question.
Thank you

I had been there end of february and it was windy and quite cold, the weather reminded me a lot of the european weather of that time, so August is definitely the better time to travel in my opinion !

Re: Another weather question

July and August are indeed the hottest months in Japan (I know, I was just there 2 weeks ago) but it does not necessarily mean it won't rain. If you'll go to a weather website there's rain right now in Kyoto but fortunately, it was warm and sunny when we went there for the Gion festival. So I guess it's all a matter of luck weather-wise.

Re: Another weather question

by globetrott

It depends how you look at it : I prefer August-rain to the one in April, but I dont like the very hot time eighter !

Re: Another weather question

Fugu, sometimes things are very simple in life:
I mentioned February for the simple reason, that I had been there in February, so I dont know for sure about April, but I supposed when the Feb. in Kyoto had the same weather like most Februaries have in Austria, their Aprils and Augusts will prettey much the same and in that case I would prefer August !

Re: Another weather question

by GrumpyDiver

I would vote for April. Less rain than in August (rainy season is late May through end of July). July and August are extremely hot and humid.

One other consideration - school holidays are in August, so families are out travelling more.

Re: Another weather question

Add me to the April camp for a few reasons.

1. June-July is the rainy season. It can potentially last into August as well, but this is rare.

2. Kyoto is a basin. Therefore, the winters are colder and the summers are hotter than the surrounding areas. It's also very humid to the point that most people can't stand it.

3. I did a quick stat check for precipitation, cloud cover, and temperature for Kyoto for those months (thanks to the Japan Meteorological Agency). All stats, aside for temperature, were similar. The only difference is that August saw more abnormally high rainy years than April. If you are unlucky, it would rain a lot more than normal. However, with the weather, you can never truly tell. The temperature averaged 10-20C (April) and 23-33C (August).

thank you

Thanks everyone, it looks like thumbs up for April. Thankyou for taking time to answer. There will no doubt be more questions!

Travel Tips for Kyoto

Removing your footwear when visiting temples

by yukisanto

Please wear shoes which are easy to take off and wear. You end up having to remove and put on your shoes each time you visit a temple or shrine as they don't allow footwear inside. It can get irritating when you go to a few temples in a day.

A bottle could save your wallet..

by musicinme

The bottled water is expensive in Japan so the running water always is a good option for saving money. The running water in Kyoto is clean and you can drink it directly. However, to me, there is a swimming-pool taste in the water. Here is the tip, you can put a bottle-full in fridge overnight then the taste will fade out in next morning.

500 Yen For 1 Full-day

by wathy

Most of places in Kyoto can be reach by this bus (not Arashiyama). Only 500 yen, you can use it for one all day.
I always will use this service when I take my friends to go sightseiing in kyoto for their Kyoto first trip.

You can get this card in any convenience store such as 7-11, Lawson etc.

Fun place to walk

by trvlrtom

This well known little strip of bars, clubs and restaurants is well worth a walk in the evening. There are dozens and dozens of places to explore - more than the casual visitor will ever have time for. Some cater more to tourists than others, but most seemed friendly and welcoming. Most of the restaurants in this neighborhood have English, so you can have a good idea of what you get.
