I love wagashi.
Wagashi means Japanese sweets!
Most famous Kyoto's wagashi is Yatsuhashi.
And when you come Kyoto, you must go Gion.
At Gion, you can meet Geisha and visit Tsujiri.
Tsujiri is Wagashi CAFE.(Wagashi CAFE means Kanmidokoro in Japanese.)
Kyoto: 20th Century Architecture.
by Intrepidduck
Kyoto is not just ancient shrines and palaces or even contemporary buildings. Here there is a wealth of charming 20th century architecture. The best way of course to see all these varying styles is on foot. Start at Shijo subway station, walk north and behind the British Council one finds the monestery like Kyoto Art Centre with it's beautiful old style European "Maeda's Cafe". After here head north along Karasuma-dori to Sanjo-dori and take a right hand turn. A couple of blocks on one finds the fin-de-sil Museum of Kyoto. This street has some fine examples of early 20th Century architecture and one almost feels like being in an Australian or British provincial city. The most stunning find would have to be the "1928 Building" former known as the Mainichi Building. It contains today artist studios, gallery space, book store as well as a progressive and quite literally underground CD / vinyl music store. This building boasts some beautiful and simple facade features, ie two pentagonal windows on it's upper floor. Another highly interesting building, and best viewed at night time, is the art deco former bank come Chinese restaurant overlooking the Kamo-gawa at the Shijo Ohashi bridge. After going through the Gothic entrance into the buildings lobby this establishment boasts a wonderful old American style elevator complete with above doors floor dial. One can take it up to the rooftop terrace.
Buy the Kyoto Sightseeing Card
by joiwatani
If you use the city bus or the subway several times in Kyoto City, it is best to buy the Sightseeing Card because it is cheaper.
The Sightseeing card is 1,200 Yen (one day card) and 2,000 yen for the two-days card. You can use this card either in the bus or in the sub-way.
Arashiyama - Japanese tofu
by Restless-in-kl about Yudofu restaurant
After a fun day exploring the sights and sounds of Arashiyama, we were happy to find this little restaurant for a hearty meal of Japanese tofu (yudofu), rice, soup and vegetables.
It's main selling point is the view which is lovely especially in autumn. Be sure to ask for a table with a view.
A set will cost US$16.23 for 2 persons which is pretty acceptable.
Kiyomizu Temple
by K1W1
The temple is another UNESCO site and draws the crowds accordingly - especially in autumn.
The grounds are worth the time to explore and the best views are from the gardens, looking back at the temple.
At night the temple is floodlit, which gives a different perspective of the site.
