If you are going to try on a piece of clothing, look at the changing area. If it has carpet, you probably need to take your shoes off before stepping into the carpetted area...
Don't try to open or close the back door of a taxi by yourself. These are operated by the driver...
Get into the bus via the back door. Pay at the front on your way out.
Have a retro coffee.... 1940's Kyoto style
by j-san about Soware
This is an icon of Kyoto's Taisho era... open til 10pm. Not exactly a nite spot in itself, but near all the nightlife of Kiyamachi street. Nice spot to meet before you go out. Girls are the main clientelle. Also thin people only - the tables and chairs are tiny!!!
Kyoto's Cafe Culture Pt. 2
by Intrepidduck about Inoda Coffee House
This one is an interesting establishment that appears to have been running for some time as a coffee house. The front area facing the street is all loungey looking with neat displays in the international style, but towards the rear of the cafe can be found a beautiful round bar. This was clearly from another era, almost like that of the Indian Raj but in Japan! Here it seems most locals hang out at, while the the area at the front was for passers by.
Himeiji Castle
by ploonic
The castle has been preserved and visitors are allowed to go in to the castle. The interior is amazing and very different to the perceived 'western castles'. I wasn't able to resist taking the requisite touristy shot with the actors there.
Feeling philosophical? Take the Philosopher's Walk
by Restless-in-kl
If you're in the mood for a pleasant afternoon stroll, come and take the Philosopher's Walk. It's a 1km path beside the canal, lined with lovely shady trees. Go at 3pm and stop for a cup of coffee at one of the quaint cafes or browse the interesting lovely shops here.
We met some lovely children who entertained us along the way and nice old couple rekindling a bit of romance (see pictures)
