Travel Tips for Kyoto
Kyoto Tourist Guidebook
by Ines28
This is a general tip about tourist information material in Kyoto. When arriving at the station, for example, you should get yourself as much material as possible, a bus map, city map and, very important, the Kyoto Tourist Guidebook.
It's just the perfect brochure, all the major sights per area are listed with a picture and a short description. Several maps, transportation information, museums, craft centers and events can be found here as well. And, last but not least, around 7 or 8 Area Walking Courses with the highlights of each course and the time the walk will take.
Nanzenji Temple
by naruto
This is a huge temple complex situated in the eastern part of Kyoto at the foot of the hills, and can be considered off the beaten track as it doesn't seem to get as much visitors as the other more "celebrated" world heritage site.
Nanzenji Temple is a very attractive temple situated on the Philosopher's Walk route and entrance into the temple complex and grounds are free.
The admission you need to pay for are:
SANMON
The two-storey main gate to Nanzenji that charges 500yen for you to climb to the second floor to enjoy the surrounding views.
NANZENIN ZENJI
This is a smallish temple just behind the aqueduct. It charges 300yen and is of interest to those who likes Zen Buddhism.
HOJO
This is the abbot's quarters which charges 500yen.

GETTING THERE
Nearest bus stop: Nanzenji, Eikando-michi. You can take bus 5 from Kyoto Station
Nearest subway station: Keage. From here, it is a 10 mins walk to the temple
HOURS

Take the Express!!
by naruto
When making side trips from Kyoto, always take the express trains.
You will find yourself upon arriving at Kyoto Station faced with a departure board with many departures to Nara or Osaka within the hour. And that it will also state that the next train leaves in 5 mins and you better hurry to the platform if you are going to catch it.
Take a moment and actually see if that was a local, rapid or express train. No point rushing for the local train, the one that leaves in 5 mins, when it stops at every stop on the way and takes ages to get to where you want to go.
You may discover that though the rapid or express train leaves a good 20 mins or 1/2 hour later, they stop at far less places, the seats are more comfortable, and you may get to where you want to go alot faster.
The electronic boards for arrivals and departures rotates between English and Japanese, very convenient.
Back to Imperial Times....
by j-san about Misoka-an Kawamichiya
This little noodle shop has a history that goes back 300Years! The Emperor himself used to eat here. Sample udon and soba noodles the way they should be! Delicious!! Nothing like the sparkling "traditional" restaurants of the tourist zones. Although the street front is all in Japanese, they have a lovely well-written menu in English! For tourists I would recommend the tempura-soba/ or udon, for 1280Yen. There are other one bowl noodle dishes for around 700Yen each average. They also have beer 400Yen for a small bottle and hot sake for 700Yen.
Flagon with the Dragon
by Logan575
An example of some of the details surrounding the world's largest wooden structure. I have a couple of funny photos of 2 boys playing around this dragon, more entranced by the aluminum water scoops than for the architecture. Ah well...

A: "I stayed at the RIHGA Royal Hotel Kyoto which is about a 10 min walk from the station (I walked directly form there) and was quite happy with commodities and price."
