upcoming trip to Kyoto

by dorish34

Is it possible to walk safely from Kyoto Station ( Righa Royal Hotel) to Gion area either day or early evening and about how far or how long of a walk??

It is about 4km. Safety is no problem as you can get there walking wide streets only.

As soon as you get out of the JR Stations in Kyoto, there is a travel office with English speaking staff. You can get English city and transit maps from the travel office. The staff there can probably mark the route on a map for you.

Travel Tips for Kyoto

Kyoto is virtually divided...

by wonga0

Kyoto is virtually divided into eastern and western part by the Kamogawa River. So tourists either flock to the eastern part for the temples and shrines or the western part for the shopping area. They usually overlook a small river called Shiragawa next to Higashiyama-dori. It is a shallow river with both sides lined with willow. Peaceful walk early morning or late afternoon...light breeze and warm sunshine helps to clear your mind. It's my parents who sat on the bridge.

Ohara-machi town

by luciano

Quiet farming town in the mountain area near Kyoto, it is home to two important Buddhist temples: Jakko-in and Sanzen-in.
From here It is possible to hike all the way to the Enryaku-ji temple complex through a path in the mountains between Kyoto and Shiga prefectures.
To reach Ohara, take bus No. 17 or 18 from Kyoto station.

Taxi

by Gili_S

To be honest, in this city I did not needed to use any taxi as all other measures of transportations were working perfectly so we didn't needed to use any taxi. But the good point is that in many locations taxi's are easily available just in case you need one.

Sanjusangen-do (Rengeo-in)

by kevarms

This temple is home to 1001 statues of the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, Kannon. Each one is subtly unique and, lined up in ranks, brings to mind the Terracotta Army. The statues were first commissioned in 1164, mostly destroyed in a fire in 1249 but rebuilt by 1266 and put in a new building.
The western veranda was popular for samurais to practice archery. In a competition known as 'Toshiya' the object was to fire an arrow down the 100+ metre length of the building without hitting a pillar. This is re-enacted annually every January 15th.

Tokugawa Shogun castle

by sandrafiza

The castle was originally built in 1603 as the official Kyoto residence of the first Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu. It was completed in 1626 by the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu, with the additional of some structures transferred from Fushimi Castle.Nijo catle is one of the finest examples of Momoyama architecture in Japan that makes splendid use of early Edo period building design and the lavish painting and carving that Iemitsu ordered.

But went you go in, why is it so empty. You will see a lots of empty room and the board will tell you that this room is used for what. I get bored with all the empty room but i have the school kids to entertain me.
