Ryokan or Hotel?

by konniemario

I was told that one should consider staying at Ryokans instead of the traditional western hotels. This way you can experience the Japanese life and culture better. However, both my husband and I have never traveled to Japan and neither of us speaks Japanese. Do you think it's going to be advisable to stay in such Ryokans? Any recommended ones wherein you've personally stayed at? Which ones and why?

I made a point of staying in a riokan when I visited Kyoto a few years ago, and thoroughly recommend the experience. I don't speak a word of Japanese. But, sorry, I don't remember it's name.

I stayed in many ryokans around Japan, but not in Kyoto. I highly recommend it. It's great to sleep on a futon on a tatami mat. Also, you can eat kaiseki, made up of lots of little dishes (kind of like Chinese Dim Sum but not really) for dinner. Many ryokans have a hot springs bath that is very enjoyable after a day of sightseeing.

Incense Makes Sense!

by DirtyRudy

I heard somewhere that if you breathe in the smoke from burning incense, it's supposed to make you smarter or something.

Here's my mom and Kikiree trying to do just that. Judging by the look on my mom, it doesn't help!

Souvenirs on Kiyomizuzaka

by ChuckG about Souvenir stores

These street is bordered with tons of little stores offering various type of goods. You will find specialized stored selling only local crafts and paintings as well as the usual souvenir shop selling everything written "Kyoto" on it. I found a vast variety of silk paintings and traditional drawings insome stores very worth buying. The price are decent. Less than in department stores

The Rock Garden in Ryoanji is one of the must see spot in Kyoto. This "rock" is the real "rock", not that "rock n' roll"

Sitting in front of the rock garden, seeing the design, the structure of the sand and rock is how the people mediatation in this temple.

Try to count the number of rock in the garden, you'll found it will never accurate.

Nishi Hongan-ji temple main building

by dabuwan

The main building is called the Founder's Hall, in honour of Shinran Shonin. It is a large wooden building (one of the largest in the world), with a magnificent facade and a long catwalk around; a lot of timber has been used... It is a major attraction for the many devotees who come here for praying. The Nishi Hongan-ji is a very active Shin Buddhist temple. You can go to http://www2.hongwanji.or.jp/english/shinbuddhism.html for more detaled info.
