Hi, will be going to Kyoto from Oct 15-19. Was wondering where to find great local food places around Hagashiyama, Gion, near Kamo river, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Philosopher's Walk and Kinkakuji temple. If any VT Kyoto members or visitors, would like to meet up during this time, please let me know. Thanks.
Hi! Welcome to Japan :-)
There are a lot of casual restaurants in "Shijo-Kawaramachi" area.
There are few restaurants near Kinkaku-ji temple, philosopher's walk...
Japanese young people usually eat dinner at an "izakaya" restaurant.
"izakaya" means Japanese style casual restaurant.
Usually, there are no English menu.... but they often have menu with photos.
By the way, we are Japanese couple in Osaka :-)
Are you coming to Osaka,too???
If so, we are very much interested in meeting up with you!
We are scuba divers,too
Ayurin, Osaka Japan
Hi again :-)
If your trip itinerary doesn't include Osaka,
we may be able to visit Kyoto to meet you :-)
(It is easy for us to visit Kyoto from Osaka)
We are working from Monday to Friday,
so how about meeting on Saturday evening in Kyoto or Osaka?
By the way, about the restaurants,
For example,
"Aji- Building Kashin restaurant"
http://r.gnavi.co.jp/fl/en/k120803/menu.htm
We sometimes eat there.
They offer all-you-can-eat Shabu-Shabu.
"Ichiba-koji"

(I'm sorry this website is in Japanese)
This is an izakaya restaurant.(Japanese casual restaurant)
I spent 4 years in Kyoto when I was a student.
And we sometimes ate at this restaurant when classmates got together etc.
Hope this helps and hope to see you soon :-)

Shijo-Kawaramachi is an excellent suggestion by Ayurin. It's a main thoroughfare and many side avenues. There are lots of restaurants to choose from. If you go into the department stores there's always a food restaurant level on the upper floors as well.
Most Temples have cute water soutces around them some are streams or wells this Dragon was one of my favorite. I don't know what temple it was but it is a huge one near the train station hard to miss.
If you are looking for shopping centers rather than souvenir shops, Shijo is Kyoto's largest shopping area. There is a wide variety of department stores and multi-story shopping complexes. The Daimaru building and Hankyu building are the largest. As is typical, there are many different clothing stores, but you'll also find book stores, electronics, and a variety of specialty shops. There are also many restaurants and, of course, you will still find souvenir shops!
The shopping arcades can be accessed from here, which are packed with more restaurants and shops, as well as arcades and the Nishiki Market. Shijo Station is located right among the shopping centers, and Shijo Street leads to Yasaka Shrine at the entrance to Maruyama Park. Gion and Pontocho both branch off from Shijo Street.
Fragrance of the four seasons and hearty hospitality
One day on our tour through Kyoto we visited the Daitokuji Temple and suddenly we stand in this Zen Temple restaurant - and it was a great experience. We enjoyed a vegetarian meal in this refined Zen Temple.
A "Teppatsu" is a round bowl made of iron and used by priests to receive food. Priests in ancient times made it a rule to live a simple life of eating all their meals from on "Teppatsu". The vegetarian "Teppatsu" cooking of IZUSEN employs theses bowls, piling them one upon another six or seven high. In the confines of this quiet temple, your are able to enjoy a dinner whenever you please.

almost hanging on a hill, you must walk a steep hillside to see the most beloved temple in the nation.
founded in 798 and restored in 1633
there are numerous shops lining the way to the temple, called the teapot lane.
The Gion district is across the river from the main downtown. It's a beautiful well-preserved area which has kept the same atmosphere for a long time. There are numerous temples in that small area and the many stoned paved roads lined up with tiny inns, restaurants and shops.
Although it's supposed to be the Geisha district, I haven't seen many. This aspect is overrated.

Q: Any suggestion for the hotels in Kyoto Centre which less than 10 min walk to JR Kyoto station? "Hi there, I’d try online booking for Shimizu Ryokan near the JR Kyoto station for dates: 8, 9 & 10 Jun. But it's fully book...."
A: "I stayed at the RIHGA Royal Hotel Kyoto which is about a 10 min walk from the station (I walked directly form there) and was quite happy with commodities and price."
