Travel Tips for Kyoto

MARUYAMA PARK

by Adeline_Foo

Visit MARUYAMA PARK during the Cherry Blossoms period. It is located just a little east of YASAKA SHRINE. It is well known for its beautifully landscaped garden and its magnificient cherry blossoms in Spring We went to the park at night and right at the middle of the park, there is a very BIG cherry blossoms tree! It was really very very beautiful. It is the oldest & biggest cherry blossoms tree in Kyoto. Every Spring, thousands of people, both locals & tourists, will visit the park and look at the tree. Here's a postcard of the tree!

Himeji Castle.

by Sharrie

Proceed to HIMEJI CASTLE: no other castle is more splendid than this marble white castle! Also known as Shirasagi (White Egret), this castle is conveniently located from the JR train station Himeji. I was lucky in acquainting with the voluntary guide who spoke perfect English and explaining the many facets of the castle to me. Thanks! Check out at the gate for guides voluntaring the touring of the castle, you may just make a new friend!

City bus

by tompt

In Kyoto it is convienent to travel by bus. You can buy a buspass for 500 Yen (April 2003 price) which is valid for one day on the city busses. There are also passes that can be used on both bus and subway but they are much more expensive.

Nijo Jinya

by mrschan

Nijo Jinya is a former inn used by feudal lords (daimyo) who were visiting Kyoto during the Edo Period. In order to guarantee the safety of the important guests, the building has been equipped with secret pathways, trap doors, hidden escape routes and various other security gadgets. It is fascinating, and every turn of the corner brings some new surprise. It has been said that the creator of James Bond visited the house for inspiration, but declared it too complicated.

You can tour the house only by a guided tour, which is held in Japanese only. If you do not understand Japanese, you must bring an interpreter with you because otherwise, you will have trouble understanding what's going on.

We found an interpreter, a very nice lady, through goodwill guides.

Truly Stunning

by Gryphon25

Ginkaku-ji impressed me just as much if not more than the Golden Pavillion. It was more the whole grounds than the actually building. It is truly beautiful from the Zen Garden, how did they do that, to the oldness of the actual structure. Walking through the gardens is amazing. There numerous water features and benches where you can sit and truly enjoy the view. Up near the top of the grounds you can see the whole of Kyoto open up before you. It is truly worth it and I highly recommend you take your time to enjoy everthing.

Entrance Fee is Y 500.
