nagoya airport has moved ...
here is the website

the best way to get there is by train..
Between Nagoya and Kyoto :
Train: JR Shinkansen
Time: 36-56 minutes
Frequency: 6 to 12 trains per hour
Fare: 5640 yen including seat reservation
Fare: 4930 yen without seat reservation

what to see??
kinkakuji(gold pavillion)
kiyomizudera(temple famous for its large terrace)
ryoanji(zen temple most famous for its rock garden)
ginkakuji(silver pavillion)
have fun

Take the bullet train as explain by previous VTer.

Only 1 day in Kyoto? Wow! You may just want to cover 2 temples and maybe walk around at Gion Area. The Kiyomizudera and Ginkakuji and Gion Place (evening) would be good. But seriously, 1 day is really not enough for such a nice place like Kyoto.

Anyway, have fun.

I really liked sanjusangendo. It's near the station and has 1,000 life-sized buddha statues. They are quite something. Other than that, the places that the previous replies mentioned are good. Try the Haien Shrine too, it has a lovely garden and bridge.

Travel Tips for Kyoto

Enjoy autumn at Kiyomizu temple

by Toshioohsako

Kiyomize Temple (UNESCO's Cultural Heritage site) is one of the most frequently visited temples in Kyoto. The locals come here to enjoy the beauty the nature brings to the surroundings of the Temple. It was built in 793 and renovated in 1633, 30 years after the Tokugawa Shougun had started. Its a "must" place when you are in Kyoto.

How to get there: Take subway to Shijou and change to City Bus (207) and get off at Kiyomizemichi and you walk 10 minutes.

Shopping Near JR Kyoto Station

by pammo about Isetan

The store itself is unremarkable in terms of shopping, but the tiered escalators are definitely worth checking out. If you go out to the courtyard outside the 11th floor, you can get a good view of the city.

There is a grocery store in the basement that cuts the prices of many fresh food items about an hour or so before closing so you can get some excellent deals. It also has a good place to pick up a bento box or other food on the run fixings. 50yen and up depending on what you are buying.

Excellent French restaurant in Kyoto -near station

by ClareyD about Nanabankan

Price was $16 per head for three course meal including drinks.
Service and food was excellent
English menu available and waiters had basic understanding of English
Could sit by the bar by the open kitchen
Used for hen dos and weddings so sometimes get booked up for the night - can see why.
Would eat there if the restaurant was in England, if you are not fond of traditional Japanese food then it's also a good choice Examples of dishes from menu

French toast
Lemon Chicken

Main Course
Beef Strogonoff

3 mini desserts on one plate
Creme Brulee (which was fantastic)
Strawberry icecream
a Toffee cheesecake
