Very Important Moss
by saracen
I cannot remember the name of the temple where I took this photo, although I recall a lake and a traditional Japanese house by it, with lots of nice, wooded walks around it, on the hills behind.
I am not sure what is so important about this particular moss as opposed to, say... other moss, but it seems to warrant special status nonetheless.
In a way, the second pic is even more bizarre - Moss the Interupter sounds like some Japanese comic book character!
Umbrella / Poncho
by bkoon
Bring an umbrella or poncho as it rains pretty often, especially during spring time. If not, you can buy unmbrella from any of the convenient stores when it rains.
Get one which can be folded as it is very cumbersome o bring around a big umbrellad which cannot be fitted into your bag.
All Day Transit Pass
by TexasDave
The best way of getting around to the various tourist attractions is by buying a Transit Day pass (500 Yen/person). It can be bought at the Tourist Information Office in Kyoto Station. If you arrive via Shinkansen, the Information Office is in the newer section of the train station, on the second floor, across from Cafe du Monde (go figure, beignets in Kyoto!)
They give you a map of the city indicating the bus routes and their numbers. The most important routes for tourists are 101, 102, 204, 205. With those four you'll get to any attraction of major importance.
Japanese Pickles
by bkoon about Various Locations
Pickles are eaten with sushi or sashimi. Japanese pickles are usually made of radish and they taste very nice even eaten plain. I was almost tempted to buy after trying the pickles at one of the shops. Now I regret not buying some back.
Walk around the landscaped garden in Kinkakuji
by joiwatani
It is quite a walk to get into the temple. However, with a good pair of walking shoes, the walk is pretty relaxing and invigorating. The landscape of the garden is so beautiful. The stepping stones are neatly layered on top of each other and to walk on the sand is nice. The bonsai trees are neatly shaped and trimmed!
