More about Kyoto Hotel Okura

Typical Western Hotel

by lesaandbill about Kyoto Hotel Okura

This hotel was very comfortable with a lot of good restaurants inside the hotel. It was close and convenient to everything...and was overall, a nice experience.

The rooms were a typical western hotel with large beds, desk, table and a tub, separate shower and the typical GREAT japanese toilet. I know people talk about the toilet experience in japan...but the japanese really have perfected the toilet!...they even had little buttons to push to make noise to be more was a hoot!

Japan - a wonderful country to visit. Although we only had 7.5 days to spend for this trip, we'd all the fun & joy!! On this trip, we went from Narita-Tokyo down to Osaka. We will definitely be back for more. I use this page for a general & simple overall introduction of the country. Refer to specific places for more insight details.

Here's a brief itenerary of your exploration...

Day 1... Spent most it on the plane from USA to Japan. Arrived Narita International Airport in the afternoon. Basically catching up on some sleep after checking into the hotel (Hilton Narita).

Day 2... Narita > Imperial Palace > Ginza > Asakusa > Meiji Shrine > Shinjuku (Keio Plaza)

Day 3... Shinjuku > Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office > Fuji-Hakone National Owakudani Valley > Lake Ashi > Atami (Hotel New Akao)

Day 4... Atami to Shin Osaka on Shinganshen (bullet train) > Nada ( Sake Brewery Museum) > Akashi (Akashi Bridge, Maiko Park) > Kobe (Moto Machi, Nankin Machi, Meriken Park) > Mosaic Park > Rihga Royal Hotel Saikai

Day 5... Nara (Nara Park, Todaiji, Nara Daibutsu) > Kyoto (Nijo Castle, Kinkakuji Temple, Nishijin Textile Centre) > Gion > Kyoto Hotel Okura

Day 6... Kameoka (Sagano Romantic Train) > Arashiyama (Togetsukyo, Bamboo Walk) > Lake Biwako (Biwako Hotel)

Day 7... Kyoto ( Kiyomizu Temple, Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka) > Osaka Castle > Shinsaibashi/Dotonbori > ANA Gate Tower Hotel

Day 8... It's time to say sa-yo-na-ra. After breakfast at the hotel, we departed to Kansai airport in the late morning. Last chance to do shopping @ the duty free shops!!

You can take a train from Osaka Airport to Umeda Station in Osaka and catch a connecting train or shinkansen to Kyoto main train station.

When I was there, I did as above except that I, also, stayed in a hotel next to the Umeda Station. I, subsequently, took a shinkansen to Kyoto from Umeda.

My travel page on Japan contains more info.

you absolutelly dont have to change trains. there is a direct one. jr haruka express, and thats the most convinient thing. the bus is only 400 yen cheaper but takes 30 or so minutes longer, so its not a big saving.

for timetables in japan use, which is an official JR site and is in english.

Haruka is the easiest, but if you prefer taking a bullet train (Shinkansen), you take it from SHIN-Osaka station to Kyoto. None of the bullet trains go through the Osaka station (in Umeda).

Oh yes, Shinkansen is from Shin-Osaka Station. Take the train from Airport to Shin-Osaka instead.

Save yourself hassle, just get the Haruka train and avoid transfers.

Travel Tips for Kyoto

One day city tour - bus

by bebejepang

Kyoto is a very big city. The better way to go arround is by car, bus, or subway.

One day bus ticket = 500 yen. The ticket can be bought at the bus infomation central (same place or next tourist information central), in front of Kyoto station (see the picture, the tourist information just at the left side from someone who take the picture). They have tourist map, included bus number and short explanation how to go to some famous areas, in several languages (japanese, english, korean, chinese).

Okashi vendors

by janchan

A sweet (okashi) street vendor. Flavours can be quite different and strange for western people.
The base ingredient for many sweets in Japan is sweet black beans... they use them also for ice-cream.

Alluring Arashiyama

Now this was a great day escape from Kyoto. We took a nice ambling bus ride to Arashiyama, a little bit daunting when you don't really know where you are going, but stick with it and you will arrive. We made our way to the train station, which was a little tricky to find, but once again, stick with it and you'll find it too. Take the Sagano Romantic Train trip, followed by the Hozu River Boat Ride, which takes you back to the centre of Arashiyama. Once back there, stroll the streets, enjoy some lunch, visit Tenryuji Temple, take a pleasure boat ride - anything your heart desires. But if you are there in Spring you MUST try a Sakura flavoured Ice Cream. I've never tasted anything so gorgeous. I thought this was just a wonderful day and would recommend it to anyone.

Make sure you leave a whole day for this trip though. And keep an eye out for Geishas.
