Star near the Golden Pavilion?

by Barmack

What is the name and significance of a huge star carved into the side of a mountain near the Golden Pavilion?

RE: Star near the Golden Pavilion?

by gogonicetrip

I think that “star carved into the side mountain” you mentioned is Daimonji-yaki.
This is a iconic fasticval of Kyoto held on 16th August that the star carved area on the side of muntain is lit up by a fire.
The star carved you think is the chinaes character Daimonji, means large.

Travel Tips for Kyoto

Heated tables in cold weather

by SLLiew

If you think that seating on the tatami (straw floor) Japanese style is tough, you have not used the heated table or kotatsu yet.

Usually sittng position is crossing your legs in lotus position, or sittng with both legs on one side or sitting on both your ankles.

But during the colder weather, a heated table is used. You put your legs underneath this small table, electrically heated. Only thing is to make sure your legs do not battle with your host's,

ASPIRIN is an internet cafe...

by kat_on_moray

ASPIRIN is an internet cafe that I used a lot when living in Kyoto. It is near shijo and is relatively cheap. It's a cafe so food and drinks are available. You can even have a massage. You get 200 yen off your drink if you're using their computers.

HOURS: 10:00am-9:00pm, open all year (brief holidays for New Year).

FACILTIES: 3 Macs, 3 PCs. ISDN connection.

COST: membership 500 yen (if you're a tourist you don't need to join), 500 yen per hour, or 100 yen for 10 minutes.
Phone: 075-251-2351

Location: 3F, Teramachi-Shijo agaru.

Look out for a big futuristic-looking pachinko parlor, from here you need to get on the escalator and then walk up another flight of stairs.

Kyoto by foot

by Gili_S

By no means I do not mean that you can go everywhere and see all this city only by foot. But being more of a traditional city and not such industrial center Kyoto is very nice city to see by foot. Just have you good sandals with you as we had and no problems :)

The Imperial Palace

by VolsUT

The Imperial palace is one of the main attractions in Kyoto and is by all a must see. It is surrounded by several Temples and a large park. It is easy to spend most of a day exploring it. It is one of the highlights of a visit to Kyoto. To enter the palace itself is kinda complicated you have to get a free ticket in a small building located like 2 blocks away in an alleyway so be peopared to do some exploring.

Heian Shrine

by daryll

It was built for the first and the last emperor which is Emperor Kammu and Emperor Komei during the Heian period. Interesting part of the architecture, claimed its the replica of Imperial Palace particularly the shrine area.

Right in front of the Heian Shrine its a huge Torii Gate (very red striking colour). Amazing though it looks new.

Why should you visit Heian Shrine:
1. Partially replica of Imperial Building
2. Garden - amazing sceneries especially during Cherry Blossom season in mid April
3. Sacred Shinto practice - if you wanted to see shinto practice this is the right place.
4. Make your wish the Shinto way for details go to Prayer & Luck
