Cheap and Good hotels in Kyoto

I'm living in Osaka (near Kyoto),so I haven't stayed with them myself.. (So I'm sorry I can't give my experience or my feedback)

But these inns look quite nice and cheap!

"Tour Club
" (near from Kyoto Station, cheap, somewhat Japanese atmosphere, very famous and popular among foreign tourists)

"Budget Inn" (This inn is also run by the same manager of "Tour Club")

Ryokan Shimizu
It is about 10 minutes walk from JR(Japan Railway) Kyoto Station.
It looks like a Japanese house.

Other cheap accommodation are...
(I'm sorry I haven't been there. So I can't say whether they are recommendable or not )
J-Hoppers
K's House
Gojo Guest House
Toji-An Guest House
(About Toji-an, one of my VT friends says it is not recommendable....)

Uno House
Ohto Ryokan

Ohto Ryokan: Try staying in a traditional style Japanese Inn

We found this small Inn on a fellow VT member page & decided to reserve a few nights here. On a previous trip to Japan I had stayed in various ryokans throughout Japan and had a really good experience with them. Our ryokan wasn't quite as traditional as I had thought it would be. You'll be pretty self sufficent if you stay here so don't expect them to serve you tea in the morning or clear your bedding for the day. Ohto is a no frills ryokan but some of the rooms do have attatched bath which is a big plus if you have children with you. We were also pleased that we had free internet access available to us in the lobby & the Inn is only steps away from an underground rail station at Shijijo. But most of all the elderly caretaker worked hard to see that all her guests were happy and served well. Don't forget that you sleep on a padded roll up mattress on a tatami mat floor...Japanese style. Ohoto Ryokan charges about $85 for two people per night. This is considered budget in Kyoto!

Unique Quality: Good central location, short walk from Kyoto Station, subway train nearby, near the Kamogawa River, & affordable.

Ohto Ryokan: We chose to stay at a small family run ryokan

This tip is just a follow up to the previous accommodation tip on this Inn at which we stayed while visiting Kyoto. The attatched photo may help you in locating Ohto Ryokan if you decide to stay here on your visit.

Ohara-no-Sato: Great Place to Soak in Ohara

This is a traditional ryokan. It has several baths and a very fine traditional Japanese garden. The open-air bath is super, and purportedly good for weariness of the body, etc.

For dinner, Ohara-no Sato serves their popular miso-nabe hot pot which is highly recommended. Miso-nabe includes top quality chicken and Kyoto vegetables delicately cooked in a large ceramic pot ni a miso broth.

PRICES
Per person is 7,500yen (US$72) for a room for 3 or more people. This price comes with miso-nabe dinner and breakfast.
Per person is 8,000yen for a room for 1 or 2 people.

Unique Quality: Best time to soak in an open-air onsen is during wintertime!

If it is not crowded, it is possible to reserve the open-air bath for yourself. Remember to ask at the check-in counter upon arrival.

Shin-nyo-do: Among the Monks

Because of some connections, we were given the privilege of staying in an inn that is used by Monks visiting the Shin-nyo-do temple. There are several private rooms much like any Japanese style hotel...with tatami floors, screens and the ubiquitous yukata...but the majority of my friends stayed in a large tatami room where we were treated to the symphonic snoring of Etsu and another unidentified mystery guest. In the morning a japanese breakfast of fish, rice, pickles and miso soup was served and it really hit the spot. I find myself missing the savory japanese breakfast since being back, altough a nice coffee and scone is nothing to sneer at either.

Unique Quality: Proximity to a beautiful Temple. Traditional Japanese style bath. Japanese breakfast, peace and quiet.
