Toji-An guest house: Meet People

A backpackers haven though bigger people will find using the toilet a major problem.

About 15 minutes walk from Kyoto train station, and within walking distance of the Toji temple.

The place can be fully booked anytime of the year so try to get a confirmation through the Internet. Way back in November 2000, a night's stay costs about 2,500yen (if my memory serves me well).

Unique Quality: Mingle with people from all walks of life. The assistants at the guesthouse are friendly and give good advice on travelling around the city.

You can also try on the kimonos and take many memorable pictures with your new-found friends.

Let a japanese company book for you

There are many hotels in Kyoto and they are all OK and all quite expensive. (I was staying at the Kyoto Tokyu Hotel). If you know somebody working in a japanese company, ask him to arrange the reservation for you; it seems that they can usually get a huge discount (up tp 70%) on regular rates for their business related travellers.

Yuhara Ryokan if you are lucky...

Yuhara Ryokan if you are lucky enough to get there when it is not busy. It is an old Japanese house with creaky floorboards but pleasant rooms and an authentic atmosphere.
About 4000 yen per person.

Unique Quality: The loveliest lady in Kyoto lives there.
They also have a small Okonomiyaki/ yaki soba restaurant a few doors down which is convenient if you don't want to wander looking for food.

Ohto Ryokan, Kyoto: Basic but homey

This is a traditional Japanese inn located quite centrally in Kyoto (next to Kamo river). It's about 10 minutes walk to JR Kyoto Station and there is a bus stop as well as subway stop (Shichijo Station) just 2 minutes away on the main road.

If you're looking for value for maney and a place to sleep as you'll be out all day, this place is pretty decent with
- free internet
- free coffee/tea and snacks
- free hot and cold drinking water (fill up your bottles before you go out)
- coin operated laundry
- comfy mattress and comforter to sleep on tatami mats in your room
- very clean place including the public bathrooms
- ask for an ensuite bathroom in your room for convenience
- there is a McDonald right at the corner just 2 minutes away
- located in a quiet street which is peaceful with very little traffic
- close to Sanjusangendo Hall

The downside :
- people operating the inn do not speak English or very little of it. You'll need to be pretty self sufficient in planning your trip as it will be hopeless asking them for any recommendation
- lots of stairs to climb. Come with a backpack
- no view

Would only recommend this place for its great location and affordable price. Our room for 2 pax cost Yen42000 (US$ 348.85) for 5 nights.

Unique Quality: Central location
Quiet and peaceful

Use of alarm clock (free of charge)
Use of tea, coffee, kettle and shampoo etc

Convenience Stores very close by
No curfew
No curfew on use of showers between certain times (which is a big plus) and two showers per floor or can opt for an ensuite room for a little extra
Outdoor area
1000 yen key deposit

Unique Quality: Staff were very helpful and made you feel welcome, the place had a friendly atmosphere, for the price it was very clean, bright and new. The hostel is in a great location for an ambitious itinerary as you are close to the station for taking days trips out of Kyoto which means you haven't got far to walk home at the end of the day. It is also a reasonable place to stay for seeing some of the main sites on the Eastern side of Kyoto such as the Philosopher's path (Silver Pavillion), Kiyomizu temple, Gion, Heian Shrine and the Sanjusangendo Temple is within walking distance. Further there is very good links for getting to other parts of Kyoto with Kyoto Station, metro station and good bus links all nearby. Recommended - would stay there again but gets booked up.

There was a very nice reasonably priced french restaurant within walking distance that the hostel recommended and some of the staff also spoke a reasonable amount of english. In addition the menu was in French (for those people who can read French but not japanese) but note that sometimes the restaurant is hired out for private functions such as hen parties due to it's popularity.

There are lots of restaurants close by, as well as a few convenience stores right by the hostel (Mini Stop and a Lawson) which sell a variety of hot and cold snacks for people on a budget as well as a starbucks cafe. Alternatively Kyoto Station has several restaurants in the basement which have reasonably priced meals and some cafes/bakeries on the main floor. For further information please feel free to ask.

Chourakukan

We found out that this Chourakukan Cafe & Restaurant is also hotel only after we already booked all our Japan days, otherwise this can be a nice accommodation option for our next visit to this lovely city.

Sun Hotel: Accommodation in a great location

The Sun Hotel is located on Kawaramachi Dori, one of the main tourist corridors in Kyoto. I have stayed in this hotel for three consecutive years, when visiting Kyoto. The Hankyu Railway terminal for Kyoto is about 600m south of the hotel. Rooms are small, but adequate for the traveller. This hotel is very popular with business people and travellers and is well priced for a hotel in Japan, so you probably have to book well in advance, specially in spring (cherry blossom season). The bathrooms are very small though.

Unique Quality: The location is great. You can walk to Gion (the Geisha district), or shop in the vast covered arcades to the west. Buses to most of Kyoto's heritage sights run along Kawaramachi-dori, which means you can easily step outside your hotel and go sightseeing.

Ryokan Ohto: Basic but highly recommended

Knowing that everything is mighty expensive in Japan, we thought that we could stay in a ryokan instead of a hotel in Kyoto. This way, we can save a bit in lodging and at the same time, experience the Japanese way of life. Ryokan Ohto is very basic...but very clean and has a good location. It has 2 24 hour convenience stores outside the alley and the bus stop is just 2 min. walk. So you can get to anywhere you want to go quite easily. It's also very near some major sights like Sanjusangendo and Kiyomizudera so that's another plus.

Unique Quality: Aside from the location, I kinda like the little balcony we had. It's located in a quiet alley so you feel a bit tucked away from the hustle and bustle of city life. And yet, it's not too far from everywhere. It's walking distance to a lot of sights, including downtown like Gion area, etc.

Casa Carinho - B and B Juno: quiet B&B

Unique Quality: Once again I have NOT stayed here, but the location seems quiet and green, unlike the dreadful downtown area and half if not third the price of the guesthouses in the green Higashiyama area.

Hatanaka Ryokan: Central yet a quiet spot near Gion

Unique Quality: I've lived in Kyoto and never had a need for any accommodation, but compared with the concrete "Inns" of the downtown area, this looks lovely.
