Travel in Kyoto in Jan 07

by stacy_yx

hi.. am planning a trip between Osaka and Kyoto arnd 3 Jan.
Probably staying in Osaka and making two day trips to Kyoto (cos can't get accom in Kyoto)
Any advice on whether the weather would be comfortable in Kyoto in Jan? (will it be cold and uncomfy for me to attempt the famous Philosopher's path?)
And is it convenient for me to move arnd during the new yr period?

RE: Travel in Kyoto in Jan 07

by Dave_xx

Hi there, i'm staying in Kyoto at the present moment. the temperature is just starting to drop to the usual levels for this time of year (day 8-10, night 0). I'm staying in a very cheap hotel close to the station called the El Inn (075) 672 1100.
The rooms are very small, but it usually has space and is only Yen 6,200 per night which is very reasonable considering the location.
I have visited in January and can honestly say that the weather is going to be cold, be almost certainly dry, with a slight chance of snow. (dry snow, not wet like in the UK).
I can't say too much about timetables for the new year period, but if you want i could make enquires for you?

Good luck,
Dave

Travel Tips for Kyoto

The Path of Philosophy -...

by wonga0

The Path of Philosophy - inside street, northeast of Kyoto. It's a small canal 2km long, lined with cherry trees. Instead of the spectacular view during blossom times, I saw a dramatic view of the path being all covered with cherry blossom petals!!

Aquaduct

by tompt

After walking up the mountain, we came down the hill at the other side where encountered this aquaduct. It was built to bring water from the mountains to the emperors palace. It seemed a bit out of place though. It looks so very Roman, not japanese at all.

Tokyo-Kyoto in three hours

by CliffClaven

If you are already in Japan, the only way to get to Kyoto is by 'shinkansen' bullet train. The first line between Tokyo and Osaka was opened in time for the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, and since then the fleet of high-speed trains has carried a couple of billion passengers without a single fatality. The service is fast, frequent and reliable. It's even possible to visit Kyoto in a day from Tokyo: a round trip of more than 1000 kilometres!

Kiyomizu-dera

by aukahkay

A World Cultural Hertage site, Kiyomizudera is the most photographed and visited temple in Kyoto. Most of the present buildings were reconstructions dating back to 1633. It is most noted for Platform Stage where one gets a panoramic view of the surrounding hills of Higashiyama. In spring, Kiyomizudera is particularly attractive with the burst of magnificent colours of the cherry blossoms (sakura). Just below the main hall is a waterfall where visitors drink sacred waters believed to have therapeutic properties.

Watch local teenagers having some fun

by trvlrtom

What do the local teens do on a weekend evening? If you walk to the north end of Pontocho, right by the bridge, you'll find groups of them having jam sessions with electric piano and just hanging out. Good harmless fun for a while before the sun sets.
