Kansai Thru Pass?
by dancinbudgie
Hi everyone...
We have been lucky enough to get cheap flights to Osaka , so are going to spend a week in Kyoto starting the end of next week. Last time we were in Japan we had JR passes, which were great then, as we travelled to so many cities. This time we are planning to stay only in Kyoto, exploring as much of the city as we can, with a day trip to Nara and possibly Arashiyama.
Can anyone advise me of our best transportation options? I have been looking at the Kansai Thru Pass, which seems like a good deal. Has anyone used it? or does anyone have agood knowledge of how it works? I would appreciate any and all help.
Thanks,
Tracey

I did the Kyoto -> Nara trip by regular commuter train.
It is easy to find Kintetsu Rail by following signs in the Kyoto main train station. Took the Express train to Nara. The trip took 45 minutes, cost 610 Yen o/w. (April 2005)
The Tourist Info office at the Nara train station is staffed by some very pleasant people. I received a free map and a detailed explanation. It is possible to walk in a great circle to see the major sites.
I think you might find this site helpful too:

If you will be spending some days in Kyoto, I also highly recommend a great book for a better understanding and a more enjoyable visit there.

Travel Tips for Kyoto
KYOTO, beautiful
by jlvillalba
The Center of Kyoto is very commercial and the streets very straight, the 90º corners everywhere make me imagine that the concept of the city Center in very European. All the bog departments stores, Takashimaya, Hankyu, Hanshin or Mitsukoshi are based here. And the pedestrian lane is protected from the rain with a modern cover to make the customer’s pleasure.
The entire city is very safe, even the darkness of the geisha’s streets is so quiet and silent that it is impossible to be nervous. Sometimes groups of students can be walking and screaming but are not dangerous with the locals and visitors.
A Thousand Surprising Buddhas
by mishkah
What's the collective noun for Buddhas? A flashmob of Buddhas?
Otagi Nembutsuji is an hour out of Kyoto on the number 72 bus, beyond the Arashiyama hills and obviously not marked on most tourist maps as there was not a soul in the entire place. Well, besides me and the Buddhas.
There are nearly 1500 carved Buddhas here, from drinking Buddhas to a surfing Buddhas, and even an Akibahara geek Buddha, complete with glasses and calculator.
Mossy, misty, and silent, this was my favourite place in Kyoto.
Bullet trains.. absolutely......

Bullet trains.. absolutely... You move so fast (and you don't even feel like you are moving..).
Amazing how fast and yet smooth they are.
'How can you tell the hoboes in Japan? - They're the guys w/ no arms!'
Foot and bus... We walked up into the neighborhoods... quite a nice walk.. nice little homes...
Bugs Bunny will feel comfortable here :-)
by Restless-in-kl about Mimlu Japanese Restaurant
It's the rabbit theme all the way in this restaurant from the chopstick holders, plates to decor and throw cushions. Very cosy restaurant serving local Japanese food.
Situated on the 2nd floor of OKI building in Gion, it offers a nice view of Gion streets. There are 2 home decorative shops located on the ground floor and top floor of this building. It's very colourful and pretty. The top floor shop is very exclusive offering handmade trinkets and decorative items. Found out that it's actually cheaper to buy in Arashiyama! I love tempura and the tempura set here with seafood, rice, soba and dessert is excellent. It's priced at US$12 per set
Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion)
by catchan
The world-famous Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) is a must-see when you are in Kyoto. The pavilion is so dazzling you'd think it was made of solid gold. It is also very refreshing to stroll in the quiet park where the only sounds you will hear are the birds chirping and the wind blowing through the trees. Indeed, an oasis for the weary city soul.
Entrance to the pavilion grounds is JPY400.
Questions and Answers
Q: Any suggestion for the hotels in Kyoto Centre which less than 10 min walk to JR Kyoto station? "Hi there,
I’d try online booking for Shimizu Ryokan near the JR Kyoto station for dates: 8, 9 & 10 Jun. But it's fully book...."
A: "I stayed at the RIHGA Royal Hotel Kyoto which is about a 10 min walk from the station (I walked directly form there) and was quite happy with commodities and price."
