This place is horrible. It was outrageously expensive to stay at this place for a start, considering that all you get is a patch of nothing on a tatami mat. The futon beds were the most uncomfortable thing I've ever slept on. We had no windows in our room so we basically had to sleep and eat in the same claustrophic prison. The public bath was a bit disgusting and not at all hygenic. The bathroom was dank and mouldy. There is no privacy in this place. The wireless was slow and we couldn't connect from our rooms. Even without them ripping us off an extra $200 it was already a horrible experience. On top of all that, they also took an unauthorised $200 from our credit card. This place is run by thieves.

Unique Quality: They made an unauthorised transaction of $200 from our credit card. Will definitely not recommend this place.

Directions: Nice restaurant across the street

This ryokan is the place to go if you want the 'authentic' japanese inn experience. They are very traditional here, and there were moments when we felt that we had slipped back in time. The owners and staff of Motonago are also some of the nicest and kindest people you could hope to meet. Our baby was sick in Kyoto and they looked after our older children while we were at the hospital. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and even though we were only there for 4 nights, by the time we left we felt like old friends. It is in a perfect location for exploring the Higashiyama district. The price included breakfast and dinner, and the meals were beautiful! The baths here are the old-fashioned wooden type, and steaming hot!

Directions: A few minutes walk from Yasaka Shrine

Fantastic Ryokan page

This website finally shows the difference between "modern ryokan" and "traditional ryokan". Since I live downtown, I see so many big concrete buildings called "Ryokan" and having looked at their websites, they will show a "traditional" interior, but it's completely artificial, an illusion of history in a concrete apartment-like block and I wonder if the western tourists emerging with hoards of Japanese students on tour of Kyoto, aren't just a little disappointed. To experience that "real" old Kyoto feeling, you need to stay in a "traditional" ryokan, ideally amid greenery ie. not downtown. And if you have the money a "luxury" ryokan, (btw. the super-famous Hiragiya, which I pass by on my bicycle all the time, is actually a tiny oasis of green in treeless downtown, just off the very busy Oike street. I have no idea what it's like to stay there and no doubt it's very high-class considering the price, but the location is nothing special Kyoto-wise.)

just glancing through, Motonago Ryokan looks wonderful:
