Kansai Passport

by tpg

Has anyone used the Osaka/Kyoto 4-day Kansai Passport which costs 6500Yen?
Using the Kansai Passport,I plan to take the JR limited express from Kansai Airport to Kyoto, store away my luggage at the station, and explore Kyoto using the one-day bus/subway pass. Then return to Osaka.

Is it true I get unlimited rides on JR trains to commute between Osaka and Kyoto stations using the Kansai Passport? If so,how long is the journey on the fastest service allowed.

If Kansai Passport you mentioned is Kansai Area Pass, you have unlimited use of any standard train and Haruka non reserved seats of JR West line within corresponding area in Kansai region.
Refere to the following site.

Hey there

Yup thats true however I could give you another tip which will end up cheaper. Get the Kansai-throuh-pass. It costs 5000yen and is valid for 3days and can be used on most other trains except JR trains. However they run just as regularly...
I used it to go from Osaka to:
Kyoto, Nara, Himeji, Arashiyama...

Travel Tips for Kyoto

Japanese carp (koi)

by SLLiew

In every Japanese garden, there is a pond. In every Japanese pond, there is more than 1 carp called "koi" in Japanese.

These colorful fishes are also called "Nishikigoi" or Living Jewels. You can have a lot of fun feeding them. You can create a feeding frenzy where the carps are literally jumping on top of each other in a giant lump of fish.

If no one is around, just try clapping and a school of carp will congregrate.

Have seen many carps in Chinese temples and Korean temples. Perhaps the origin of having carp is from China.

Hozukyo, north of Arrashiyama,...

by j-san

Hozukyo, north of Arrashiyama, Kyoto. It is a cool place to hang around in the summer. You catch the Sannin line from Kyoto station and get off at Hozukyo. Then you'll need to make your way down to the river. Just follow all the others doing the same.

To and Fro Kansai International Airport

by bkoon

The Kansai Airport Limousine Service will bring you to Kyoto or other parts of the Kansai. It is a bus service and cheaper than the train and it is right outside the arrival hall. About 90 minutes and 2,300 Yen (with reservation) to Kyoto. Buy return tickets (cheaper) if you intend to return from Kyoto.

Another option is the JR Limited Express "Haruka". About 70 minutes and 3,690 Yen (with reservation) to Kyoto. Reserved and non reserved seats are available. A reservation costs around 500 Yen.

Toji Flea market

by yukisanto

Toji flea market only happens once a month, on the 21st to be exact, regardless of the day of the week. When we went, it was a tuesday. Quite a few tourists, both local and foreign. What to see - everything from antiques to clothes to food to bags etc. Prices range from cheap (700yen for a kinomo material pouch to 4500yen for the one of a kind cap I bought) The flea market opens early in the morning. We went at 9am and it was packed already.

P/s: beware of pickpockets. It can get really crowded at the flea market.

Temple of the Heavenly Dragon

by sacrebleu

Together with Togetsukyo Bridge, Tenryu-ji is another landmark of Arashiyama. The name means the Temple of the Heavenly Dragon is actually famous for its zen style Sogen Garden. The temple was established in 1339 by a shogun but has been ravaged by fires eight times over the centuries since its founding, thus most of the present buildings date only to the Meiji period (1868-1912). However, the garden behind the Main Hall is one of the oldest in Japan. It retains the same form as it was designed in the fourteen century, was the first Special Historical Scenic Area named by the Japanese government. Honestly, there isn’t much to see apart from the white sand and rocks surrounded by wall but the sand is so immaculately lined with patterns which makes it alien-liked, you know a bit like crop circle!

There is no entrance fee for the temple but if you wish to visit the garden and the main hall, it is 500 yen. Visitors need to take shoes off when visiting Main Hall. Whilst you can see the garden when walking around the Main Hall, you will have to enter from another entrance situation diagonally across the Main Hall where shoes are allowed.
