Inexpensive and close to the bus station
Sorry, I didn't stay here but it is a block away where we stayed. Per the information center at the Kyoto Station, this is one of the cheapest hotels in Kyoto. If you ran out of hotels in the area, this is one of the closest to the station. If you wanted convenience, I am pretty sure that this will be good for you! Besides, who would like to stay in a hotel for so long when there are so many beautiful places to see in Kyoto? Believe me, you will ran out of time so we just used our hotel to take a shower and sleep! Most of the time we are up early and go to the hotel late!
Unique Quality: Proximity to the mall, bus stations and restaurants.

Very Helpfull Staff
Many staff spoke english and all were very helpful. Across from the station and very convenient for all Kyoto transport. Breakfast service was good. Better value for money than other Japanes hotels we hve tayed in at this price range

Luxurious stay, great location - reasonable price!
We stayed at New Miyako in August of 2006, shortly after they renovated a new wing. I highly recommend this hotel, not only for it's gorgeous decor & landscaping, but the service as well. It felt like we were at a four star hotel paying decent prices! The green & black tea in our room every morning was delicious, bathroom had a fog-proof mirror and heated toilets with built-in bedet! haha not that we ever used it.
My favorite part about staying at the New Miyako was that it's right across the street from Kyoto Station, the largest train hub in the city - so it was easy for us to go sightseeing in remote parts of Japan and come back to our hotel the same day. It's also a great reference point for taxi drivers when going back home after a late night - thank goodness they all seemed to know new miyako hotel or kyoto station!
It's also within walking distance of Toji Temple - a place with a huge & beautifully landcaped garden that has many little oasises which you're going to want to spend more than one day exploring ;-)
Unique Quality: From the moment you walk in, you'll be greeted with warm and impeccable service - almost everyone speaks relatively good english. Alot of our best experiences in Kyoto were actually recommended by some of the staff here. The landscaping in the bamboo garden is gorgeous and there's also a chapel in the courtyard that's surrounded by fountains and a water moat - it looked stunning lit up at night from our bedroom window!
There are also these cute little drink vending machine rooms on every floor if you need a drink or some cable tv cards.. hah! Beware of the japanese porn on half of the cable stations in your hotel room. If you need a midnight snack, the hot and cold food vending machines downstairs will do the trick
Other tips:
-Even though they have 2 computers downstairs with internet access, they're almost always occupied. Go to TopsCafe down the block for internet instead, you have to pay a little fee but they have private booths, comics and free drinks. I wish we would have done this sooner.
-The little cafe next door to the hotel has EXCELLENT coffee & espresso - don't bother with the pancakes though....
Such a beautiful hotel - I loved staying here.

New Miyako Hotel
This hotel is defintiely a 4-star hotel, and is priced like one too! The beds were really comfortable and the rooms were large. The best thing about this hotel is that it's really close to Kyoto Station -- only a 5 minute walk!

BEWARE: prices much higher than quoted
We booked through Expedia. The New Miyako Hotel wouldn't let us book 2 adutls and 2 children in one room even though they had rooms with 2 full sized beds, so we booked two rooms. We confirmed our rate at $115 per night/per room, but when we checked in they charged us 60 percent more for the extra person (child) in each room. So our expectation of $500 for 2 nights became close to $1000. Expedia was no help originally trying to blame the rate increase on currency flunctuations and then (after being told that 60 percent increases aren't currency flunctuations) saying oh well the quote is for one adult in a room. NO HELP AND ACCEPTING NO RESPONSIBILITY. The hotel was completely unflexible on the pricing so we had a choice of sleeping on the streets or paying the higher fee. Outrageous! The accommodations were fine, but the surprise pricing was a rip off. I recommend avoiding this hotel.

Tourist Friendly Hotel
As one of Japan's most popular tourist cities I shouldn't have been surprised to see so many foreigners trying to check in all at the same time. It seemed pretty chaotic, but the staff were very efficient and even managed to take our luggage to our room (and no tip necessary either!).
Unique Quality: This hotel is absolutely massive which had me thinking customer service might not be great, but I was wrong. It was superb for our entire stay. In particular I liked the huge buffet breakfast. Depending what time you go it can be a bit of a scrum, but there is always plenty for everybody.

Superb location !
The New Myako Hotel ist superbly located infront of Kyoto's Shinkansen- and Metro- as well as the Railway-Station.(JR-Line, Kintetsu-Line)
All areas in Kyoto, Nara and Osaka are easily accessible from the hotel.
Although the hotel is very large and everyday by noon conquered by hundreds of tourists, front desk staff tries hard (if it is not lunchtime) to cater for their needs.
Unique Quality: Nice rooms, good service, excellent breakfast-buffet and restaurants. Moderate prices (except alcoholic beverages)
