2 nights enough?

by coanne

Hi,

I am sorry if I am asking the same questions like all others, but I would like to find out if 2 nights in Kyoto are sufficient.

We (2 of us) are coming from Tokyo, and hope to cover the usual touristic spots, Philosopher's Path (whatever that is; we will be reading more on it) and some off-the-beaten track to really immerse into the culture.

Can anyone recommend a cheap, traditional ryokan near to JR kyoto station? The ones found so far cost over 10,000Y for a double room.... We are looking for something cheaper.

Or is there B & B available?

Pls share other tips, recommendations for must-sees, must-dos in Kyoto!

Thanks lots, folks :)

can u m ake it 3 days, 2 days is too tight. We found 8k yen for double, without breakfast, but that was during low season, just 5 minutes from Kyoto JR station, 10,000 yen is quite fair esp during high season

hehe, i also spent 2 days at Kyoto! however i got infection on the 2nd day, so i spent one morning in the hospital!!

I arrived Kyoto on a Monday, I visited Kiyomizudera, Heian and Gion on Day 1.

Day 2 i went to the Fox temple Where Memoir of Geisha was shot. the name is call fukimiya emm.. somehting like tat, then i visited the golden pavilion. Then i wanted to go Ninjo Temple, but it's always close on Tuesday!! so pls don't make the same mistake lik me. I also failed to get into Imperial Palace, as i was Late :(

So i believe 2 days should be sufficient. Amanohashidate is another great place to go from Kyoto, but that will take one day's time.

race at the Kansai Airport

by ploonic

When we touched down, we saw a Japanese native speeding by on the airport luggage trolley. We couldnt resist not doing it. and even had a trolly race down a empty kansai airport arrival hall. (this was around 7 am in the morning.) I won the trolley race!!

Hemeji - Japan's Most Beautiful Castle

by bkoon

Many say that one will not need to visit any other castle after seeing the most beautiful castle of Japan, the Himeji Castle.

Although a bit far from Kyoto than other nearby places, this castle is worth a visit. It is white in colour and a World Heritage Site too. The main highlight of Himeji is this castle.

NOTE : Please refer to my Himeji Page for more tips or visit Sonia's (heywinks) page for comprehensive information too.

From Going from Osaka ~ Kyoto...

by Beachcomber

From Going from Osaka ~ Kyoto we took the bus which took about 1 hr 30.
We took the shinkansen (Bullet Train) from Kyoto ~ Tokyo which takes about 2 hours. You can go almost all over Japan on the shinkansen. It is quite and comfortable and fast.
You can hire taxi's with english speaking drivers who will take you to sightseeing places and can explain about that particular attraction. I found this very helpful as I couldn't speak or read Japanese.
It is also possible to go around Kyoto by train but I haven't tried this so I can't comment on it.
Travelling by foot would be a good option to travel around the alleyways in Kyoto city.

Izakaya - Japanese pub

by j-san

An Izakaya - a Japanese pub. This particular one is rather affordable (most dishes 500Yen) in spite of being located on Ponto-cho. The servings are small and usually things like fried eggplant or chicken satays, ordered to go with your beer.

Sanjusangen-do

by bonio

This is a hall containing over 1000 statues of a Buddhist Goddess - an awesome and just a little scary sight! All of them are different too. An amazing place to visit. Remember to take your shoes off before you enter and no photos inside, this one borrowed from their brochure.....
