Hi there,
I currently live in Sapporo, and while ive been to Kyoto before a few years ago, Im heading down again next weekend for a visit with my folks. We need suggestions on somewhere to stay. The last time I stayed round the station, but do you know of any reasonably prices hotels around Gion? Also, it is winter now, are any of the attraction closed? Finally,Id like to get them to try staying in a ryokan one night, do you again know of a reasonble priced one, where they can have a taste of Japanese accomodation.

The last time my wife and I stayed in Kyoto we also stayed in Gion.
We stayed in a place called San to An which I am afraid I cannot recommend although it was quite inexpensive.

Search Kyoto on the Club Tocoo sight and you will find 17 choices but most are not in Gion. However there is a ryokan called Gion Shinmon So which is fairly cheap.

As for closing in the winter...I don't think that will be a problem. Kyoto attracts tourists both foreign and Japanese all year round so I am pretty sure that everything is open almost 365 days a year.
