Kyoto: Ryokans

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on April 27, 2004

A ryokan is usually a small family run guest house, and it's a traditional Japanese accommodation facility found everywhere. They are a little like a pension or bed and breakfast and are generally a nicer place to stay when in Japan compared to youth hostels which are almost as expensive. was a pleasant and friendly place to stay at for its family aspect and smallish size

Unique Quality: Ryokan Hiraiwa was a pleasant and friendly place to stay at for its family aspect and smallish size. Small bright and cosy tatami rooms with TV, air-con and fridge. There there was a coin washing machine, beer vending machine - very important and this establishment did traditional Japanese breakfast at an extra charge. Its located in a quite area and has become a popular place to stay for other western travellers.

Directions: 15 minutes walk NE from JR Kyoto station, between the tiny Takase River and the Kamo River, and 20 minutes walk from central Kyoto.
