Must see places in Kyoto

by pepemorris11

I will be in Kyoto on 4th 5th and 8th november 07. We are a group aged between 50 and 65. I know there are so many things to do and see there but so little time and energy. U tire more easily when u get older and cant move as fast as when u r younger . Please help. What are the must see places that we should visit and the food that we should try. Just the best temples in autumn. we can give the others a miss so that we dont have to rush from place to place. any good eating places where we can try fresh seafood at a reasonable price US $11- 20 or even cheaper than that.cos we r on a budget. heard of arashimaya. is that tooo out of the way. if not, how far away and how to get there and lake biku??
Many thanks

Walking Tours in Kyoto

by heywinks

There are two walking tours that I know of in Kyoto, for those pressed for time or who want more in-depth information when seeing the sites. This is also a good opportunity for those who have limited time in Kyoto.

1. Johnny Hillwalker`s Johnnie Kyoto Walking
This walking tour is suspended from Dec-Feb. 2000yen/adult, 1000yen/child (15 & under).

2. Sunrise Tours by JTB
Prices vary depending on what tour you choose.

To Tokyo with Care

by walterwu

When booking a Shinkansen to/from Kyoto and Tokyo, might be good if you can specify which side seats you would prefer when making seats reservation at any JR station.

When I boarded the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo, all the seats on the left side of the train were taken up. Later realised that Mount Fuji would be viewable (on a clear day) from the left side of the train bound for Tokyo. The reverse would be true if you are departing from Tokyo to Kyoto.

Reservation with the JR Rail Pass is relatively easy at Kyoto Station or any JR Station. Need to indicate to them the departing station and destination station and the schedule that you prefer. The timetable is available on JR website or a hardcopy is available at any JR station.

CHEAP CHEAP!!!

by j-san about Shakey's

When you are reeeeaaally hungry and verrry poor! The food is nothing special... but it's ALL YOU CAN EAT and the cheapest you will ever find in Japan! Much cheaper than convenience store bits and pieces. Lunchtime (11am-4pm) is only 600Yen for adults, and half that for children younger than five. Dinner (5pm-9pm) is 850Yen for adults (again less for children). Small non-smoking section available. Pay as you walk in, then help yourself! Fried potato, pizza when it has just been freshly made (listen to the cooks shout it out!), the salad bar where you add your own dressing. Avoid the bizzare custard and strawberry pizza :P

kiyomizudera temple. great views

by chaistarr

nestled in the hills and blanketed in sakura trees, this large temple (a few temples really..) is a must see. just ??300

Kiyomizu-dera is situated on approximately 130,000 square meters and consists of over 30 structures.
Whenever you visit this temple you won't be alone, except maybe early in the morning. All kinds of good luck charms can be bought, and also there are many shops selling japanese goods on the steep road to the temple. the charms sold can cure disease or help with luck in love and life.

Many of the buildings in Kyoto have been burnt down and rebuilt during a long violent history, but kiyomizudera remained intact. It never favored any of the warring parties, and consequently, there was never any reason for revenge. The temple burnt down once however, but was reconstructed a few years later in 1633 by the Shogun. So, even if the now standing buildings are only 350+ years old, the original design is from more than 1200 years ago, almost twenty years before the capital was moved to Kyoto.

i tihnk my pictures will speak more words about this pretty temple. i suggest you visit during the sakura festival.
