Tamahan Ryokan

by scamperr

As part of a 2 week stay in Kyoto this April 2007, my husband & I are planning to spend 1 night in a really nice, traditional, Japanese ryokan in Kyoto, "just for the experience". I recently came across 'Tamahan' on the Japanese Guest Houses website and am interested in making a reservation with them. Has anyone personally stayed at this ryokan? If so, could you tell me if it's possible to spend just 1 night there and is there any other way to get to Tamahan(e.g by bus, on foot)besides the 15 minute taxi ride from JR Kyoto train station suggested on the website? Would you also know what the Japanese Guest Houses' email address is as I can't seem to find one on the website? I'd love to hear from anyone who can help! Thank you!

I can't be sure exactly what transport you would need to take, but I can tell you that there will definitely be another mode transport there as it is situated amongst a lot of tourist sights. If you are planning to arrive during the day, I suggest that you simply go directly to the very good tourist information centre at JR Kyoto station when you get there. It is always full of people and I have found that they speak English quite well. They will most likely direct you to one of the many buses that depart from right in front of the station or to the underground. This may not work for you if you are wanting to have everything planned ahead of time, but I have been to Kyoto several times without making concrete plans beforehand and have had a great time, each time. Good Luck.

Hi,

I have not stayed at the Tamahan Ryokan but it seems to come highly recommended as a traditional Ryokan. I believe this is their direct website

Hope this is of help to you.

Maiko won´t stop for a picture

by tompt

If you go to Gion at the beginning of the evening to make some pictures of Maiko, bear in mind they won´t stop for you!

They run on their high healed shoes through the streets to their next appointment. So take a fast film in your camera.....

From the airport to Osaka or kyoto

by yukisanto

From the airport, you can take the haruka limited express to the cities of osaka and kyoto. From outside the airport, there is a JR shop/counter whichever you want to call it. Exchange for your JR pass there (we had a 2-day JR west pass). For non reserved seats, it's cars no 4,5,6. They also divide it into smoking and non-smoking. It take about 1hr to reach kyoto.

I recommend you take the haruka if you have the pass, if not, it's not cheap at 2000+yen for a ticket to kyoto. The JR west rail pass we bought costs 4000yen for unlimited travel for 2 days. You have to buy the pass outside of Japan.

Name Kiyomizu Temple

According to legend, Priest Enchin built his hermitage and a small chapel here in 778 A.D. With support from General Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, the Temple was erected in 798.

Many of the present buildings were reconstructed between 1631 and 1633 by order of Shogun Iemitsu Tokugawa.

Kyoto's Historic Jewel

by TexasDave

The shogun's Kyoto home and its gardens are well worth a couple of hours to see.
The nightingale floors are an experience all in themselves.
The surrounding gardens with a pond are also very beautiful.
The only negative is that photography is not allowed inside the palace.
