*magic night by a small mountain jinja*
manpreet and i were desperately trying to make it to the ginkakuji (silver pavillion) before it closed, but when we got to the gates it was dark and the lions guarding the gates looked fierceful and scary in the darkness. even the night had already fallen, in the horisont there was a narrow brocade of pink from the setting sun...we found that the silver pavillion is surrounded by a big garden and a bamboo forest, where the winds were soughing and moving the restless nature...it all felt a bit supernatural - the wind breaking the silence, you could even feel the spirits around there, it was empty there, so empty that you could feel what is beyond emptiness...something mysterious... we thought we would climb up, and search our way through the forest to find what's there, there was life, happy, nocturne celebration of the spirits...unable to make it over the barbed wire, and the watching eyes of the ancient guardian lions and the hi-tech security cameras, we felt a sudden urge to start walking a small mountain path up towards the hills. there in the midst of the dark high trees we saw light, a small mountain hill jinja with lit up lanterns floating in the wind...the wind was so restless that night, and we knew that even the jinja were empty and people had gone home, there was such a wild celebration going on, impossible to describe the spirits, you can just feel it so much when you are there, you know you are not alone, even no-one is there, no-one you can see...gets a bit scary!!! me & my friend got spooked by the guardian spirit as she saw him walking on the hill slope above the shrine, she saw it, i felt it, and we ran away from the altar quicker than ever before. however, he did not come to drive us away, he was inviting us to come closer and to enjoy the warmth of the lanterns in the cold forest night...

Kyoto is not a huge town- at least not like Tokyo etc, so getting around isnt such a big deal. The subway connects most parts... besides there are busses and taxis plying. You can also hire bicycles for the day...

The trainstation of Kyoto is worth visiting. It's an extremely extensive building with all kind of shops. On the northside of the building is a long stairs from which you have an amazing view at the interior of the trainstation.
NIJO CASTLE
by Adeline_Foo
The castle was originally built in 1603 to be the official Kyoto residence of the first Tokugawa Shogun Ieyasu, and it was copmleted in 1626 by the third Shogun Iemitsu, who transferred some structures from Fushimi Castle, built in the Momoyama Period (1573 - 1614), consequently, lavished decorated Nijo Castle is representative of the height of Momoyama architecture. In its day, it served a symbol of the power and authority of the Tokugawa military government.
This place is big .... make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes as you have to walk alot!
