Maple Sendai Youth Hostel: Cheap Youth Hostel

Japanese name: メープル仙台ユースホステル

A simple youth hostel.

Don't be fooled by the central sounding location Aoba-ku. When walking it takes about 40 minutes (3.3 km) from Sendai station. Of course you can take a bus (which I did on a cold day in January). From Sendai station, bus stop is in front of Sendai hotel, take city bus no. 25 that will terminate at Shiheichō Keiyu Kitayama (子平町経由北山). After a 20 minute ride get off at the Dentistry Hospital stop (歯学部付属病院・東北会病院前, Shigakubu fuzoku byōin Tōhoku-kai Byōinmae), from where it is only a 3-minute walk.

Unique Quality: Closed: December 31 - January 2
Check in: 4 - 9 p.m. (16:00 - 21:00)
Check out: 6 - 10 a.m (06:00 - 10:00)

Chitose Youth Hostel: Hard to find in the dark

I rang ahead to make a reservation although I travelled off-season. Youth hostels in Japan always want to have a pre-warning that someone arrives.

Even though I picked up instructions from the tourist office in the railway station as to how to get to the hostel, I had a hard time finding it. I didn't recognise the name of my stop on the bus loudspeaker and travelled too far. I guess it's more difficult to find something in the dark.

I only stayed there one night and I happened to be in a room by myself. I don't remember the place as especially friendly either.

Hostels: Hotels in Sendai

Hotels in Japan would break many people's budgets, so when I went back to visit Sendai I booked a few nights at a hostel. Hostels in Sendai tend to be a little bit different than what we would expect in North America - but this is mostly because of their customs.

The hostel owner picked me up at the train station and brought me to what looked like a house (and was). I was the only person staying there at the time and had my own room with a heater, and a communal bathroom and my breakfast and dinner were included in the room price.
I think that I spent about 4000YEN per night. Not bad considering a hotel would have been over $150USD.

I can't remember the name of it, but I will try and find out and post it here.

Maple Hostel: Cheap and comfy

The place looked new but we were told it was built over 30 years ago. Clean and quiet with many different size rooms at differerent prices. We stayed 6 in a room comfortably. A/C TV included. Shared bath.

Unique Quality: nothing other than being really clean oh and with no curfew. But please don't come in all loud and obnoxious. The family that runs the place are pretty forgiving but they live there too and have kids. That said, we came in at about 3 and were as quiet as can be with no problems. Too bad it took us 30 mins to find the place after a night at a club AND a taxi ride home. That's a story in itself!
