Shimaya Ryokan: Breakfast @ Shimaya Ryokan
We payed an extra 1300 Yen per person to have breakfast at the ryokan. 1300 Yen is for the Japanese set, while 800 Yen will get you the western breakfast set.
The breakfast was prepared by Mrs Yumoto, the owner's wife and it was good and filling, including rice, miso soup, grilled fish, pickled vegetables etc. Great start for the day ahead.

Shimaya Ryokan: Traditional Japanese family-run ryokan
Shimaya Ryokan is very highly rated by its guests on the website, so we decided to book our stay with them. The ryokan is very cosy and the owners are very nice and friendly, giving us lots of information (on where to eat for lunch and dinner, what to see and buy in Nagano City etc), even giving us free rides to and from the Snow Monkey Park. When there were fewer guests around at the ryokan in the morning, Mr Yumoto also arranged for us to use one of their public baths as a private one.
The room we stayed in was on the 3 floor. It was a traditional Japanese room where we slept on the tatami floor (with mattress and blanket warmers). Our room came with its own attached toilet and bathroom.
The ryokan is located within walking distance to some cheap and good restaurants, and also convenience stores. It is an 8-minute walk to the Yudanaka local train station.
Unique Quality: The best thing about staying at this ryokan was the hospitality shown to us by the owners, and the free transport to the snow monkey park. It was a great experience!

Yamano Hotel Hakuba: Beautiful hotel near Ski Jumping Station
This is a nice hotel near the Ski Jumping Staion. It is run by 2 brothers and the Romanian wife. They speak very good English. It has splendid views surrounding the hotel. There is a free pickup/drop off service at the JR Hakuba Station. We had a triple Japanese-style room. The room was clean and spacious. My husband had an onsen bath which cost about US$3. There is also a free internet access at the lobby. As we had our laptop, we use the internet access remotely from our room at no cost. There is a pickup/drop off service at the JR Hakuba Station. We had wonderful meals at the restaurant prepared by one of the brother. He had 8 years of experience with a restaurant in Tokyo. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves in Yamano hotel.
Unique Quality: Breathtaking views

Gallery and Lodge Noichigo: Hakuba Best Home Stay Experience
An excellent hotel for a taste of Japanese Hospitality. We had a wonderful stay in the hotel or pension run by the owner, his wife, his daughter and grandson. It's like a cottage. We had a triple room. The owner is an artist where you can view his drawings, mainly flowers in the living/dinning room. As the name suggested, it's a hotel and also his gallery. Free pickup and drop off service at the Hakuba Station. The owner even drove us to and fro to 2 ski slops to play snow, a car ride to view the snowy mountains, Jumping Station and offered to drive us to a natural onsen if we needed a soak. He loan us 3 pairs of snow boots and a snow sledge for my son, at no additional cost. We had a wonderful dinner and breakfast prepared by the owner's wife. You can have internet access at the daughter's computer. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would come back again if I come to Hakuba. It's one of the most enjoyable stay we had in Japan and it's also value for money.

SHIGA LAKE HOTEL: Warm & Friendly Ski Resort
Shiga Lake Hotel is attached to the ski fields, so you can easily walk with your skis/snowboard from the hotel to the ski lifts. I was impressed by the facilities offered in this hotel. If you came unprepared for skiing, you can hire skis/board, goggles, ski gloves, hat, and snow suit! All this for around $20 ($US). There is a communal (gender segregated) 'onsen' (Japanese baths) at the hotel. It is ohhh, so good and hot after being in the snow all day. Remember to scrub down before getting into the baths. They provide shampoo and soap. It is a very clean and spacious onsen.
I went with a group of skiiers, and we shared 5 people to a room. Sounds cramped? But the rooms were large! There were 2 seperated spaces, divided by small split-level stairs, one space had 2 beds, and the other space was a tatami-mat room where 3 people could easily lay down the provided 'futons' (Japanese mattresses) and sleep. All bedding was supplied. Also a table, heater, and tv were in the tatami-mat room. Of course, there was also a bathroom and toilet. The hotel provided indoor slippers and also a 'yukata' for each person(Japanese style bathrobe).
Unique Quality: Unique Qualities:
-Connected to ski fields.
-You can hire all ski gear.
-Onsen (hot baths)
-Large, Clean Accomodation
-Friendly, English Speaking Staff

BLUE WINDS - HAKUBA
Nagano was host city of the 1998 Winter Olympics. It is the closest city to the Japan Alps where the main mountain events were held... in Hakuba!
Hakuba is a 'ski town'. I have been there twice and have learned to snowboard there. There are heaps of runs to choose from and lots of places to stay.
We stayed at a little 'pension' called the Blue Winds close to Hakuba Station.
This place has rooms with bunk beds or Japanese futons. The cost was 4500 Yen per person per night. Breakfast was available for another 1000 Yen each.
Unique Quality: Close to skifields, Kurobe Dam, Hakuba Ski Jump Facilities, Onsen (Hot Spring). Have a Tennis Court (for use in summer) and a dining area.
