We chose Shimaya as our first stop in the Nagano hinterland on our Snow Monkey expedition. It was a brilliant choice. Our rooms were spacious (much bigger than the average Japanese hotel room) and comfortable with private bathroom. Whilst the tatami room provides only low seating, in the warm paper screened balcony were a table and chairs which provided our less flexible knees & hips some respite!

Beds were warm and comfortable, with good padding underneath. The wifi was free and worked well in the room.

The hotel offers breakfast for a modest extra charge if you wish (though we bought instant noodles from one of the shops in town and used the supplied hot water to prepare our own).

The hotel has its own onsen baths (male, female, and one which can be reserved for private groups for a modest charge)

Unique Quality: The proprietor and host, the enthusiastic Mr Yumoto was ever so helpful, driving us up to the Snow Monkey Park, providing suggestions for a day trip to Obuse (and hustling a group of guests down to the station to catch the train!) and getting our luggage on to our next stop in nearby Shibu Onsen.

Directions: Walk uphill about 300m from the station (pass to the LEFT of the Lawson)
