Train excursions from Nagasaki
by tathraman
Our cruise ship visits Nagasaki March 28. We were there last year and have toured the city. This time we'd like to take a train ride to a town or village within say, 100 km radius where we might see Japanese life from another perspective - also hopefully blossoms.
Any advice will be much appreciated.
Thanks
David

There isn't too much in the area of 100km, but you can do some things.
1. Gunkanjima: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4414.html
2. Sasebo: It's a small town 1 hour north of Nagasaki. I haven't been there myself, but it's famous for it's burgers. It's also home of a US base but they say it provides a different taste of Japan.
Otherwise, there really isn't too much. You can see that's within reach. If you have 2 hours to spare, you can get out to Fukuoka by train. It's 2 hours each way.
Hopefully someone else can help you out.

Hi David,
Still in Nagasaki prefecture, but outside the Nagasaki city, Unzen and Shimabara are nice places to visit.
See tourist info in English here: http://www.unzen.org/e_ver/index.html
and here: http://www.city.shimabara.lg.jp/english/index.html
Both of these are in more country side than Nagasaki city, you should be able to see a bit of different lifestyle.
Cherry blossoms should be in full bloom in late March. :)

You could try going to Saga Prefecture. The Yoshinogari area has recreated an ancient village site. Karatsu is famous for its pottery and has a castle:

Monument of a Child Praying for Peace
by gogonicetrip
At the bottom of the steps leading down from the front of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum in Nagasaki Peace Memorial Park is “Monument of a Child Praying for Peace” depicting a girl wearing a kimono and holding a folded paper crane.
At that time of the atomic bombing there were several schools in the Ground Zero area and some 10,000 school children are through to have perished in the bombing.
On the 20th anniversary of the atomic bombing, donations were collected widely from children who express their wish for peace, and this statue was unveiled on August 9, 1967 and remains to this day as a symbol the aspiration for eternal peace.
