I was in Sasebo back in 1973-75.Is there still a bar called the Westener in sailor town?There was also a place called Three Ace's that had the best fried rice I ever ate. Thanks Mac
The Westerner is still there! In fact, some of the ladies that worked there then still work there today and I am not joking! A couple of the women are in there 60's, still pouring beers and telling stories of the good ole days.
I actually feel it's a must visit for a beer if coming to Sasebo.

This is common throughout Japan, but not for me. Most Japanese restraunts will display little art replicas of what there menu offers in a widow in front of the store. The food!!!! There are so many great places to eat, and so many differnt types of food to try! Japan can be an adventure every day.
If your a Navy personnel and your paycheck is winding down come to Gramerphone. This joint is a replica of a typical boring bar you would find back in the U.S. It's walls and ceiling are plastered with old U.S. Dollars with writing on them from past sailors and Americans that frequented this place. It's music is hush down to the tone that you can hear leaves bristling down the street. There is no karaoke in this bar. Just select some songs from their CD album and they will play your selected tracks. Or just bring your own CD and they will gladly play it for you. And don't bring Rap and Hip Hop CDs to this place because you will ruin their scene. Rock and Alternative Rock music only PLEASE! This is where you would come and talk about your problems with. There are a couple of cute Japanese girls that work here. Gramerphone is also networked with Anchor Bar and Bunny Bar. As American as you want to be.
Living in Sasebo has been a somewhat interesting time. Sasebo has the feel of a laid back big Japanese country town, but with all the crime of a normal size city. For a start their is a US Navy base (which i am apart of) that must be the size of a yenny so any chance the sailors get they leave the tiny base and mingle with the locals. This should not be a bad thing, but you need to remember that the local Japanese people living here are country people and that includes their way of thinking... basically, NO GAIJIN. When the sailors encounter this hostility they become disgruntled and then so on and so on. Now dont get me wrong, it is obviously not a one sided argument. The sailors do usually what sailors have always done... drink and cause trouble. Therefore, when the locals see this they get upset and you can imagine what happens after that.
If you can get past this obvious hatred of these two sects of people living in this town, i am sure you will have a wonderful time. Sasebo has some beautiful countryside and mountains. With a breathtaking view of the ocean.
