Nikko hotels are usually expensive, and I don't often have the opportunity to stay in one, but the Nikko in Niigata city is relatively inexpensive and worth the stay. If you can't normally afford a Nikko hotel then staying at this more affordable location is highly recommended. It is a somewhat scaled down version of the grander Nikko hotels, but is very new, opened in 2005 I believe. The location is a bit awkward, being out on a pier, you have a taxi ride or a bit of a walk to get away from the hotel, but this shouldn't deter you as Niigata is not a large city (in fact walking is highly recommended), and the hotel is located near to the currently trendy Eki-mai area, or you could even walk into the old downtown across the bridge, in 20 minutes.
Unique Quality: Best view in town, close to the train station and nightlife.
Directions: Short taxi ride form Niigata eki and the Shinkansen stop.
