Stayed with my wife in March 2005. Rooms are all bright and airy. Some of the staff speak English and all the staff are incredibly helpful. At 4,500 yen per person per night if offers the best value we found in Japan. We didn't have dinner in our rooms but saw the food trays and they looked excellent.
There are separate onsen for men and women and three private family onsen for the use of guests. It is in the entertainment district, close to Beppu's oldest onsen and lots of great restaurants. We stayed 3 nights and wished we had booked for longer.
Unique Quality: Rooms are very bright and well designed and staff very helpful. Public and private onsen are superb. Best value we found anyhwhere in Japan. Stayed at the Minshuku Kokage in Nov 2004 and liked ti but this ryokan is much better in every respect.
Directions: Entertainment disctrict, one minute from Takekawara onsen, less than 10 minute downhill walk from station.
