The small onsen town of Yufuin has the mountain Yufudake towering over it. Along with some Japanese friends we climbed to the top of the 1583 metre volcano. It took us about 2 hours to climb.
I believe that this volcano is extinct although it may be dormant!
The Aso-Kuju Mountain Range that I have also climbed in contains Mt Aso which is definately an active volcano!! (all my pics from this trip are in NZ so you'll all have to wait for those!)
