Visit Nakatsu city!!
It is a small city but if you like to visit country side, you will love it!! BECAUSE it is my hometown!
As for attractions there, you can visit Mr. Yukichi Fukuzawa's house. He is the guy on the 10,000 yen note!! There is a museum just beside the house. He is the founder of Keiou University in Japan. Also he is the first person to study overseas, the US. The museum does have the English explanation so you need not worry about the language.
Besides that, you can visit Yabakei. It locates about 30 min drive from Nakatsu city. It has beautiful mountains, especially in autum. The leaves turn to red and it is breathtaking!!
If you go into the mountain, there is a village called Shinyaba, meaning deep yabakei. The road is very narrow but one spot has few restaurants and accommodations along the road. The area is famous for 'soba' flour and 'yamaimo', sicky potato. The best recommendaion to eat there is 'tororomeshi', grind sticky potato on bali rice, 'tororo soba', soba noodle with grind sticky soba, and 'soba manjyu', red bean buns made from soba flour. MMM yammy!!!
The seenary is specutacular as well. It has typical Japanese montain seenary.
If you are visiting there, let me know! I will tell you more. I always miss the food there. Also hot spring! Beppu city is famous for spa, hot spring. In addition, Yufuin village is one of the popular tourist spots in Oita as well. Things there are pretty expensive in Yufuin because the village itself is there mainly for tourists. BUT it is worthwhile to visit once! You can really relax in the spa. In winter, soaking in outside spa looking in the snowing weather is fantastic!! Of course you don't feel like getting out from it...
