Speared Ceiling.
I am active duty military in Okinawa on SOFA. Is it possible for me to purchase a house in okinawa? what laws are there for foreigners buying property? does anyone have any experience with this?
You have to have a permanent resident visa to own property in Japan as a foreigner...that usually means you have to have a sponsor such as a Japanese family member (spouse or other relative who is a Japanese citizen) but there are other ways to do this. All involve large sums of money, the ability to speak read and write Japanese fluently and have a Japanese bank account. So unless your spouse is a Japanese citizen, as SOFA status person it is pretty difficult. You can go to one of the housing agencies off base and ask one of them if you want to get better details. I suggest you ry Sunny's Housing, since they are the largest agency on the island and have all English speaking agents. May I ask why do you want to do this? Are you planning to retire there?
