What destinations in the REGION are cheap from Osaka?
by jborsecnik
I'm wondering what Asian (or other) regional destinations are generally relatively cheap FROM Osaka (or Japan in general). I will be living in Kyoto for a year, and I'm curious about some travel options from there.
thanks! jeff b

I just would like to let you know that no place in Japan, cosedering the rate of Yen to USD, is cheap. The whole Southeast Asia compared to Japan is very reasonable.

Thanks. I know that is can be much cheaper to vacation outside of Japan than IN Japan because of high prices in Japan in general. But this depends on getting good airfare, among other things.

With the Shinkansen and the good train network, there will be a lot of places that will be worth exploring.
1. Nara is about an hour away.
2. Koya-San is about 90 minutes away - the monasteries, temples of the Shingon Budhist sect, Okunoin cemetery.
3. Himeiji with its famous "White Swan Castle" is about an hour away.
4. Ise is somewhere around 2 hours away. The famous Ise shrines (inner and outer) and Meota Iwa (Wedded Rocks) are in the vicinity.
Going a bit further afield"
1. Hiroshima is about 2 hours away (Mija-Jima and the famous shrine and O-torii water gate are just past Hiroshima).
2. Tokyo is about 3 hours away.
That's my first cut at some day trips worth looking at

Try Korea, China (mainland), or Thailand. All are close to Japan and cheaper. However, I didn't think it was expensive to live in Japan compared to the US. It was very comparative. It all depends on your lifestyle. If you are working in Japan your company will pay for your transportation to/from work so you don't have to worry about that. Some companies will subsidize part of your rent - depends on your contract.
There are cheap places to eat...$1 plate sushi, meals for less than $10. Or you can go high-class and eat at restaurants that charge $50/pp or more. It all depends on how you want to live.
I think transportation is probably the most you will spend money on. Go to the kiosks near the train stations that sell discount tickets instead of buying directly at the ticket station - that will save you a bit of money. These discount shops are only available near the major stops...JR Osaka, JR Kyoto, JR Himeji, JR Kobe, JR Sannomiya, JR Namba...just to name a few.
Have fun living in Japan. I loved it!
Travel Tips for Osaka
OSAKA TOWER
by kiwigal_1
Well... would any trip to a large city in Japan be complete without a trip up the local tower?? haha. This one was nothing special to be honest. I actually enjoyed better views from the Umeda Sky Building. The tower was very close to Den Den Town which made it an easy place to see as we were in the area anyway.

One day when we took another street from our hotel and we discovered this tiny temple tucked away between the modern skyscrapers.
Don“t know the name of the temple nor could we find anything about it in the guidebooks.......
subway
by tompt
To get around in Osaka the subway is a convienient way. The subway has several lines which are color coded and easy to use.
The one way tickets start at 200 yen though, so if you want to go 1 or 2 stops consider to go walking....
For everything about the subway, how to use it, how to buy a ticket and more see the website of the Osaka Municipal Transportation Bureau.
Osaka castle

Osaka castle and museum.
This was very interesting as a re-creation of a japanese castle with a pretty good museum. Well worth a look with lots of picture opportunities and great views over Osaka.
Also pretty good teppanyaki stalls nearby.
Shi-tennoji Temple
by freddie18
This temple was founded 1400 years ago - the first year of the Emperor Suiko in 593 and obviously the oldest temple in Japan. It was constructed by Prince Shotoku who introduced Buddhism to Japan. The buildings in Shi-tennoji temple were arranged and stand together in straight line better known as the Shi-tennoji Cathedral style.
Shi-tennoji temple is close to the Sinsekai area, Nippon Bashi with line of shops with highly technical products and near the bustling quarters with full of elegant department stores, bars and restaurants.
