Yes, if youre going to go so close to famed Cherry blossom time why not try to get during this famed season when theres so much abloom! thats when Im going whenever I go!

Re: Visiting in Feb

by ilovefreedom

Thanks so much! i might also go to Kobe as well since they are so close together...... is it going to be snowing in Ossaka and Kyoto in Feb?

Thank you

Re: Visiting in Feb

by SfumatoPants

Snow is a possibility during February, but unlikely. It doesn't accumulate, it usually comes down as wet heavy flakes and is washed away or melts quickly.

If you are going in after mid-February, you should be able to see the plum blossoms. In Kyoto, the best place to see them is at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.

If you want to see snow, you typically have to get to your destination early, because the snow is often gone as early as 9/10AM.

Kobe is not particularly interesting for most people, but the sites there will not be affected by the season, because it's mostly the harbor, the Chinatown, and some museums. I think Nara is a better option. Most of the sites there are not dependent upon weather to appreciate, so the fact that it's February won't affect much. (there are a couple gardens that will be dead, but there are enough other sites, so it shouldn't matter).

Travel Tips for Osaka

Good guides

by OsakaHatter

The two magazines pictured opposite are two of the most popular free papers in Japan. Both magazines are particularly useful for getting up to date listings of cinema, stage and live music awards.

Japanzine is handy for people travelling throughout the country as it covers the whole of Japan and features Carisma Man, but none of us have a clue what it's implying. Um.

Kansai Scene has very useful street maps of the most popular areas in Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto showing all the featured bars and restaurants. The maps also indicate where you can pick up the Kansai Scene. Obviously this is largely useless, as by this point the magazine is sitting in your hands.

The magazines can be picked up in many bars, cafes and bookstores throughout the city (HMV, Virgin and Tower Records are usually a good bet).

Another useful travel guide is the street map provided by the tourist information offices.

Roots coffee blend soft drink, okay - Brad Pitt???

by PartyRambo

I am aware of the Japanese 'yen' for popular American pop culture icons to sell everything under the sun, but it still looks odd on a billboard.
Do you think Brad LIKES soft drink coffee?
Or even knows what the photo was taken for?
Maybe an advertising exec in Japan can let me know how the system works, purely out of consumer interest...

Good &expensive

by Tupelodan

Taxis are very good but very expensive. ... $10 New York cab ride will cost $20 in Osaka. ... No tipping, though, so that helps a little. ... Cabs are always clean and I never got the feeling the driver took me on "the scenic route." .... Take as a last resort. .... Ride the train.

Osaka-jo

by travie

Osaka-jo has a tumultuous history. Originally completed in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as a result of the unification of Japan, it was destroyed by the armies of Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1615. Rebuilt by the same forces that destroyed it, it was destroyed again by the Tokugawa forces rather than letting it fall to the forces of the Meiji Restoration in 1868 (thanks Lonely Planet Japan 2003!). The castle standing today is a 1931 reconstruction of the original.

There are lots of interesting photos, items and minature models of the history of the castle and Osaka city inside the building. The climb up the stairs to the observation deck is steep but well worth it! The 360 degree views of Osaka are exceptional. Osaka is probably not the prettiest city in the world so do not expect jaw dropping views but the view is nice all the same (see attached photos) :) Admission is 500 yen.

Universal Studios Japan

by Beachcomber

With So many rides and things to see and do there is something for everyone at Universal Studios Japan.
The streets are styled like American ones and the size of the place is absolutely huge. The whole park is immaculate and you could easily think you were in america, well almost.
Avoid comming here in the peak of summer (August). It was so hot (38 Degrees Celcius) that you didn't feel like walking around. But you can easily go into air-conditioning. Make sure you bring or buy at the gate a fan and hat.
Waterworld is a great show, the jurassic park ride is heaps of fun, back to the future ride is heaps of fun too and a good way to cool off, terminator 2 3D is fantastic. Whilst I couldn't speak japanese you can still have lots of fun. There are many more shows and rides to see.
