Hotel In Osaka

by freddie18

Will be in Osaka from May 9 to 12 (3 nights), landing at Kansai Intl Airport.
I will be with my wife and grown-up daughter. Please help me on the following:
(1) Is it better to find a hotel in Kansai or in the city of Osaka?
(2) Any suggestion on hotel (Triple)
(3) Are there any hop-on hop-off bus tour in Kansai or Osaka?
Your help will be appreciated.

RE: Hotel In Osaka

I found the Hokke Club was quite cheap and a great place to stay in Osaka.

It was just around the corner from the main train station, and if you need a taxi with all the luggage, it's only the min fare.

They had both Japanese and Western style rooms; I stayed in the Japanese ones and had the use of the Japanese bath. If you do the same and get to the bath early when it opens in the evening, you get the entire bath to yourself!

Travel Tips for Osaka

Barber Shops in Japan are...

by rmiya84778

Barber Shops in Japan are always memorable to me. Why? When you get your hair cut at any barber shop, they will wash, shampoo then cut and style. Shave is also available. A massage is done afterwards. Before they are finished, you are then brushed off and there will usually be no leftover hairs on you body or neck! You get very personal service that is excellent! Note: Fee for hair cut can run anywhere from 3,000 to 5,500 yen and more. A bargain for the service is an added bonus.

Mena Survari not included

by OsakaHatter about American Beauty

A tiny place with a good atmosphere and a reasonable range of music (which is louder outside than in).
American Beauty is ideal for a beer and a natter with a couple of mates or the friendly bar staff. Just be wary of the dangerously strong Long Islands! Come one, come all. Send us your poor, your unwashed and unwanted....for we are the land of the free.

We're ramen...(these are getting worse)

by OsakaHatter about Ramen Shops

Although it came from China orginally, the bowl of ramen is Japan's answer to the kebab.
Perfect for either a cheap meal or a late night, after drinks snack, the sheer effort of consuming so many noodles may well tire you out and put you on the way to the land of nod!
There are ramen restaurants all over Osaka, and indeed, Japan. The one pictured is a famous one on Midosuji avenue that has several branches in the dotombori area. Prices vary wildly from restaurant to restaurant (from 180 yen upwards, average about 600 yen) but basically you will pay for what you get. A good general guide to the quality is the amount of Japanese salary-men eating there!
And remember, in Japan, slurping is acceptable... There are many varieties of ramen, but the basic is a noodle broth with cabbage, spring onion and slices of pork.
Most restaurants offer additional types of ramen, such as miso flavoured or with an egg added, while some also serve beer and gyoza (a Japanese dim-sum equivalent) to supplement your supper.
Extras such as kimchi and garlic can be added to personal taste.

Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel

by OsakaHatter

Allegedly (Osaka Tourist Board do have a tendency to lie) the worlds highest ferris wheel, this is a 15 minute ride into the sky above Osaka Harbour. Inside the cabin you receive commentary in Japanese and English and some basic maps indicating what you can see around you. Apparently one of the most popular first date venues in Osaka, the wheel is more of a curiousity than a must do, particularly given the rather steep 700 yen price. For better views of the harbour, try the nearby WTC at Cosmosquare. Even better views of the whole of Osaka bay can be found from the Kobe Cable Cars which depart from Shin Kobe Station.
The wheel is at its most picturesque at night when it's lighting scheme acts as a weather forecast for the coming day (red for hot, green for mild and blue for rain). Ironically, however this is when the view from the wheel is at its least impressive - you'll just have to concentrate on hugging your chosen squeeze instead. Which ain't such a bad thing ;)

Osaka Ferris Wheel

by mikegr

700 yen will buy you a trip around the Osaka Ferris wheel which lasts 15 minutes. Ferris wheels are not renowned for thier thrill factor, but this one is very big and is pretty scarey for those of us without good heads for heights.

Go during the day for a decent view of the city (though the view from the Osaka World Trade Centre's 55th floor is much better! (just one stop away at Cosmosquare)) or at night to see it illuminated (when it is much more attractive).

Interestingly the big wheel also acts as an indicator of the following days weather. Pink means that the weather will be fine, Green means it will be moderate and steel blue predicts rain.
