A Bunch Of Questions On Osaka

by ce31

OK. Here's the deal: My friends and I are thinking of going to Japan in the first half of January. All of us (About 8? It's not really decided yet.) are 17 and, needless to say, we need to stretch our money. Next thing, we have NO idea where to start with anything at all. All we know is that we want to start with Osaka and then work our way up to Tokyo as our last destination before flying back from there.

So... A bunch of questions I have (for now):

#1. Lodging: Is there like a place which offers apartments that can accommodate all of us? As cheap as possible and as convenient as possible?

#2. Transportation: What kind of transportation is best for moving around Osaka (and maybe the neighboring regions); bicycles? Train? Something else?

#3. Duration: How long on average do we need to see the general attractions in Osaka? We'd like to see both the modern (trendy places), traditional (shrines <- a must! xD) and tourist-y stuff. Maybe some recommendations?

#4. Food: Where do we start?! Japan is like a food haven and from what I've read, Osaka is considered one of the better food places in Japan.

Okies. I think I'll end with this first. There's so many things that we don't know and need to know so help of any kind would be absolutely useful. Thanks! =D

Well, we've not confirmed the exact flight yet 'cuz we're really busy with exams for until the second week of November but the cheapest flight we've found so far is an economy class on China Eastern Airlines. And adult ticket (taxes and fees inclusive) is SGD$997.87.

Hi there, I've been to Japan 8 times but only go alone or with 1 or 2 friends.. Please visit my Japan travel page.. Here let me try answering your questions:
1. cheapest is capsule hotel, only men accepted and numerous all over big ciites. If there are ladies around, try hostels.
2. it depends, mostly should be train. You can buy the rail pass, esp the "Seishun 18" (meaning youth 18) to save money as i see that you are plannning to travel from Osaka up to Tokyo. You can go Japan Rail website to see more details.
3. I havent been to Osaka... sorry cant help for that. You can see the tips here provided by other members.
4. Most restaurants offer good food. Japan is surrounded by sea, all seafood are fresh, sushi, sashimi... are must eat!! When in tokyo, go restaurants around Tsukiji Market. Beef is also amazing!
Have a nice trip!

Travel Tips for Osaka

Osaka-jo Castle.

by Sharrie

Visit OSAKA-JO CASTLE: The interior of the castle houses an excellent collection of Toyotomi Hideyoshi memorabilia and displays relating the history of the castle. Go right up to the top floor (I think ... 8th floor) and it provides a bird's eye view of the entire city!

Middle Eastern in the Far East

by OsakaHatter about Sahara Moon

A small atmospheric place in the backstreets of Shinsaibashi, the food and atmosphere encourages repeat visits and knowing nods from fellow gaijin when the name is mentioned. It's the perfect place for friendly chat with good food, either as a relaxing end to the day or as a prelude to the classic Osaka all-nighter.

Serving a good range of food from North Africa to the Middle East, the best way to experience this restaurant is certainly with a larger group of 4 or more people so that more dishes can be ordered and shared.

It's not the cheapest restaurant in Osaka, although becomes better value with bigger groups.

and for those that care to dabble in such things, tobacco pipes are also available... No one dish stands out, as the overall combination of small amounts of different dishes provides the most satisfying meal.

Saying this, however I would recommend:

humous with garlic - a great starter, particularly served with fresh warm bread.
the special rice - creamy and crunchy, tasty and good value as an extra for your group to share to fill out the meal.
the kebabs - to be honest, personal choice on meat perference, I've enjoyed each one I've tried but tend to favour the lamb.

Go to Imabari and See Imabari Castle

by FamousWorldTraveller

Imabari Castle is in the city of Imabari, Ehime Prefecture on the Island of Shokaku. It is a beautiful medieval castle. It is unique in that it is situated in flat land on the beach (sort of) and not on a hill. Most Japanese castles (and, indeed, most European castles) were built on hilltops for defensive purposes. Imabari castle's moat is sea water redirected from the Seto Inland sea. The inside of the castle holds a good museum, and the top of the castle gives an incredible view of the islands and bridges of the Seto Inland Sea.

Main Hall of Shi-tenno-ji Temple

by freddie18

Shi-tenno-ji Temple is the oldest temple in Osaka. As the name implies, Shi-tenno-ji temple was built in the Shi-tenno-ji style with the inner gate, main hall, pagoda and the hall for sermons and lectures.

I visited this temple with a sightseeing tour bus and entrance was already included with the tour fee. If you are touring the temple on your own, the admission fee is approximately 300 yen. It is open everyday except Mondays. For schedule, please see my other tips on Shi-tennoji Temple.
