Liberty Osaka
by kevarms
After two aborted attempts to visit this musuem on earlier Osaka trips I finally made it. It admirably attempts to publicise the many human rights abuses that even today are still all too common in Japan....discrimination against many minorities such as the burakumin (the lowest caste in feudal Japan, and still treated dreadfully!), ethnic Korean and Chinese, the disabled, women; effects of pollution. I left feeling a little depressed at witnessing the darker side of Japan, which maybe is the whole point of the place.
Opening Hours:
Tue-Sun 10.00-5.00
It's located a few minutes walk south of Ashiharabashi Station on the JR Loop Line
Kansai Airport - an Island at Sea
by PartyRambo
This man-made island airport is an amazing feat of architecture & contstruction.
It was designed to be earthquake-proof, as Japan is prone to quakes.
And although it has sunk into the sea a lot further than planned, it's provided a badly-needed alternate to the Tokyo/Yokohama travel routes.
FUGETSU OKONOMIYAKI
by rmiya84778 about FUGETSU OKONOMIYAKI
Fugetsu is famous Okonomiyaki restaurant in Osaka. There are now many Fugetsu Okonomiyaki restaurants (chain stores) all over Osaka. But the original one is in Tsuruhashi, and everyone says that the taste is the best at the Tsuruhashi location. Okonomiyaki! Top off this meal with cold Japanese beer. (Asahi, Kirin)
Namba Shopping Arcades
by miketrudeau
Culture and Madness! These covered arcades in the Namba area are rupturing with people as various birds, and shopping to match. Hat shops, fabric, trinkets, accessories, various quirky paraphernalia...There's quite a lot to see here. Lots of great restaurants too, and a couple of very excellent bars. Take at least a day to explore around, and you'll find you will occupy your time easily! Try some Pachinko and keep your eyes out for one of the discreet street shrines. Return at night and enjoy the many artists selling their work on the street. Also, you'll find many musicians and street performers set up shop after the stores close down for the day.
Osaka Hikari Renaissance
by Rabbityama
The Osaka Hikari Rennaissance is Osaka's December Light-up festival. At night, the Nakanoshima area is lit up with light displays. There is a light show, river boat rides, and other activities. There is also a lot of great food and other displays, such as the Christmas tree and sand sculptures from Tottori city. The light shows and displays are all free to view. The river rides and food are not, of course.
