Check out here:
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2276.html

Many stores are open until Dec 31st and open on Jan 2nd. You can enjoy "fukubukuro"s (blind shopping in a bag) during new year at department sortes.

By the way, are you really sexy like the pic?

Wat's that? Blind shoppin? hmm... how does that work? Erm... i will reach on the 31st and leave on the 2rd so i need to do all my shoppin on the 1st that's y i need to kn if the shops are open on the first day of the new year.

Well, as to whether i'm that sexy or not, u decide.By the way, are u the old man in the pic or is that ur father?

Many stores will be closed on 1st. But as you see on the page I mentioned above, if you visit big temples or shrines, like Sumiyoshi Taisya in Osaka, you will see many stalls and find interresting things.

Fukubukuro's are bags with many goods enclosed, which you buy without knowing the contents. Priced from 3,000 yen to 20,000 yen or even more. Normally the contents are of big discount.

oh... yes i do remember that, paying a lump sum for a goody bag.Oh well, i guess i arrived on the wrong day then.Perhaps i will try and visit the temples as u have mentioned.

Last question though, is the famous aquarium open on the 1st as well?

For what its worth, I'll be there at that time too. My wife is Japanese and she says New Year's is the biggest holiday of the year and everything will mostly be closed. mostly people go to temples and pray and eat moshi.

Shi, I have some rare US and European notes and coins I would like to try and sell while I am there. Any tips on how to go about it. I only have a japanese vocabulary of about 200 words and can't read or write at all, but I do have interpreters.

Hi Chixie,
You should move to N.Y.I know VT is not supposed to be a dating service, but with a picture like you have posted, IF !!! that is you, you should have no trouble getting many answers, and many travel tips.I happen to be a free lance journalist, writing mostly pop and jazz, and covering concerts all over the world. I meet the performers then write about them before their show comes to town. What do you do for a living, or do you just travel.tell me something about you. Looks like the latter. I notice your posting is old , and for New Year's Eve. What have you been doing lately? please send answer to my E-mail NOT VT forum mail.
My very best wishes and good luck,
Jerry

Travel Tips for Osaka

It's green! -- Oizumi Ryokuchi-Koen (Park)

by nickinosaka

Oizumi Park is a hidden gem in Sakai. It's the park I wish I could have played in as a little kid. There are long, wide, winding paths, a duck pond with a walking trail and shaded pavillion, a play structures galore (including a pirate ship!). There are also lots of spacious lawns, which makes it a great place for a picnic and to let your kids run around and blow off some steam.

To get there take the Midosuji line south for Nakamozu and get off at Shinkanaoka station. Go out any exit, and you will see a huge shopping centre. Go down the smaller street on that side, away from the station, and you will see some apartment buildings on your left and smaller houses and shops on your right. It's about five blocks to the main entrance to the park.

Train

Osaka is a big city and so it have few major train stations. We used Shin Osaka and Osaka station to get from/to the city. Check carefully where exactly your train stop and where you actually need to go when planning your trip.

Chico's Mexican Restaurant

by rmiya84778 about Chico's Mexican Restaurant

You take elevator to reach restaurant. Once inside, walls have decor of typical USA Mexican restaurant so you get impression food is authenic. Spanish not spoken here! To me this restaurant was unsual and I mean this is in positive way. My first impression is MEXICAN food in Osaka? Atmosphere is nice, loud for many people enjoying while I was here. Taste just wasnt Mexican to me, for I am Hispanic/Japanese. Anyway, food was delicious.
I had tacos, chips & salsa, beans and Corona beer along with Margaritas and Tequila. Drinks were authenic! Mexican Food-Not autthenic, yet taste is good. Mexican food taste compeletly different at this location. Best way to describe is Japanese way of cooking Mexican food. Taco's, beans, rice and dinner plates along with appetizers.

Osaka Ji Koen

The park of Osaka Castle is the place to be on sundays. With the castle as main attraction this park is a nice setting with trees/water and defensive walls. On sundays however the invasion of the students takes place. Rockbands, Harajuku Girls, Street performers start invading the park and it turns into some kind of open-air festival.

Outstanding Osaka

"Flex Stay Hotel and Osaka Aquarium"

I stayed in the Flex Stay Hotel just down the street from the Oka Department Store (to the left). After checking into the hotel, I went for lunch at Sui-Ka just down the street. The lunch bento boxes were amazing and delicious!

The Osaka Aquarium is outstanding. A must-see attraction in a building with eight floors. The Pacific Northwest tank has 5400 tonnes of water. I spent about three hours visiting this place.

Purchase a aquarium fee and train pass from the Main Train Station for a great deal.

"Osaka Castle"

I went to Osaka Castle. It was a fantastic experience. The castle was built in the 1400s and surrounded by two moats. The castle was burned down in the 1600s and air raided in 1945. The Castle has eight floors and has beautiful lookout on the top level.

"A Cosmopolitan City"

After taking a nap and feeling restless at 2 am, I decided to go for a walk. I looked at architectural buildings and shrines. I was surprised how safe and comfortable I felt walking around alone in a city in the early morning.

I walked around the shopping promenade, the canals, and the grand theatre.
