Hi fellow VTers,

I'm planning to be in Osaka in the first 2 weeks of Dec. Can anyone recommend a nice onsen (with great scenary & food) within arima onsen? i much prefer the private outdoor onsen so that i can have the place to myself for an hour or so. There are so many that i found on the web but most of the websites are in japanese, hence making it difficult for me to make a choice.

also, will i still be able to catch autumn leaves the first week of Dec?

thanks heaps,

I don't know about the hot springs in Arima well. I found the following site. If you have not visited yet, please check it.

I read the information about the autum leaves viewing in Zuihoji park which is most famoust spot. They say the best is mid November. So early December might be a little late. Of course, in Arima it differs depend on the area. You may find a nice place. They also say Mino park in Osaka has the best view in the begging of December.

I live in Kobe. So if you need any help, I will more than happy to help you.

Travel Tips for Osaka

Sakura (cherryblossom)

by tompt

It is not only in Osaka, but everywhere in Japan. In the spring when the cherryblossom is in full bloom the japanese get all excited. Pictures have to be taken and the best thing to do is to have a picknick under the blossomtrees.

This tree is on the Osaka castle grounds and you canĀ“t sit under it. But it is worth a picture!

American shopping under the Rising Sun

by PartyRambo about Americamura

The Americamura shopping district is an American product dream for many young Japanese.
The Japanese culture is constantly changing, following thousands of years of closed doors, to now have major social, technological, cultural, language and other differences, thrown at them.
There is a heavy retro-look to the Japanese youth - I'm aware that the 1990s Japanese held a fasincation with 1950s American culture, but now it seems to have caught up in time to the present. Lots of trendy shops & cafes to choose from... some will seem familiar to the American tourist, some will seem awfully schlocky... and some will find customers trying to chat with you to practice their English, and to ask if you know Brad Pitt or Harrison Ford... :>

Takoyaki Vendor

by mikegr about Dotonbori Street

I was under the impression that eating in the street in Japan is considered rude. Given the popularity of vendors in Osaka, this seems not to be the case.

This vendor is selling an Osaka speciality - takoyaki. Not to everyones liking, it has to be said!

Takoyaki are small chunks of octopus cooked in batter balls so that the outside is firm and the inside is still sloppy. They come served on a small tray, brushed with sauce and sprinkled with herbs and bonito (fish flakes).

Beware they are very hot when first served (and occasionally come with a warning "Dangerous!!!!!"!!!!!).

Worth a try but I suspect most people will prefer okinomiyaki - another unpretentious Osaka speciality served by the vendor opposite (see my other tip!)

Hanami by the banks of the Okawa River

by aukahkay

For a whole week in early April, about 4700 cherry blossom trees come into flower for about 4 km along the Okawa River. Japanese families, friends and colleagues are out in full force to enjoy hanami by the Okawa River. There is a festive atmosphere as food stalls sell takoyaki, okonomiyaki, yakisoba, udon and other Japanese delights. The cherry blossom trees are lighted up, creating a magical atmosphere perfect for a romantic stroll along the Okawa River.

the view from the top of the castle

by globetrott

Unfortunately you are not allowed to take any photos or videos inside the castle and museum of Osaka, but at least you can do so on top of the castle, on a large terrace going into all directions. That way you will see some of the great decorations of the palace, the fish for instance are ment in order to keep away fire from the building. My 2nd and last photos are showing some great decorations of the corners of the fence of that terrace.
