Solo visit

by JoeReaney

Hi everyone,

I'm flying to Osaka on the 12th October by myself and it would be great to meet some fellow travellers - either wise residents who can show me around a bit or other newcomers who I can explore the place with. If you want to know a bit about me, I've been teaching English in Kathmandu for a month and have a blog at the following address: nepalandonwards.blogspot.com. If you want to get in contact, my email is butidontlikecarrots@hotmail.com.

It'd be great to hear from you,
Joe x

Hi Joe, I would suggest that you get in touch with fellow VTer Ayurin. Just search for Ayurinhiro under Meet Members. She's from Osaka and we met up during my trip to Kyoto and when she came over to Malaysia.

I was going to suggest contacting Ayurin too! :)

Her and her husband are fabulous and so sweet! I met up with them a few years ago when I was still living in Japan.

Travel Tips for Osaka

Takoyaki (octopus balls)

by Carino

First of all, I'm not a fish lover. I usually don't like anything out of the sea. Therefore I was very surprised that I just love to eat Takoyaki (octopus balls)!

My friend told me that Takoyaki is a special food from the Osaka Area and that even people from Tokyo are enjoying going to Osaka to have some of them.

You can get them from street vendors or in restraurants. Look out for the red lantern with black writings on it. That's the sign for Takoyaki!

Yummy! Very delicious!

On our first day in Osaka,...

by Andrei222

On our first day in Osaka, Hitomi and her boyfriend took us to a small restaurant in Shin-Osaka Station where we enjoyed a very good Ramen-style dinner. Having learned by now about all our friends' ways of paying for most things, I picked up the check before one of them did. Although Hitomi let me pay this time, she told us that her mother would be upset if she did not pay the following night because her kind mother had given her money to treat us all.

The following evening, Hitomi and best friend Kaori took us to some building with a very tall atrium where we looked at replicas of food dishes through glass cases of several restaurants before deciding on the one offering the largest shrimp we had ever seen, tempura style. Even our Nihonjin friends wondered how we would pick up the huge shrimp with hashi (chopsticks), but we managed all right. It was delicious.

Osaka Castle

by vic&michael

When I went to Osaka Castle, there were dance teams doing energetic dances on a stage below the castle. It was very entertaining. The castle is fairy-tale white with gold trimmings. Very impressive on the outside. However, on the inside, it had lost all it's authenticity. You could forget you were in a castle and think you were in a narrow modern museum with tonnes of steps to climb. A little disappointing. However, it was cool to look at the old Samurai armour, and their samurai helmets with different designs. It was interesting to note how scary the armour would have looked to the village people back in the old days. Some used boar's hair for the face mask, and they looked like scary mythical beasts.

Tennoji park - the zoo

by tompt

Also in the park is the zoo. Entrance fee is 500 Yen / 150 Yen for children. The zoo is open from 9:30 - 17:00. closed on monday.
There are some modern exhibits, like the one about africa. And we think it is a nice place to visit with children.

Some 360° pictures can be seen on this website: http://violet.imedio.or.jp/cgi-bin/VR_ENG.cgi?ACTION=MAP&FIELD=tennoji
