Because so many foreign visitors to Japan seem to be afraid to travel to cities beyond the Shinkansen line, Matsue city has provided an incentive for foreigners to visit: discounts on most attractions!
The following are the places that offer discounts (usually 50%) for non-Japanese visitors:
-Matsue Castle (Japanese 500 yen, foreigners pay 280 yen)
-Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum (Japanese pay 300 yen, foreigners pay 150 yen)
-Buke Yashiki (Japanese pay 300 yen, foreigners pay 150 yen)
-Sightseeing Boat Tour (Japanese pay 1200 yen, foreigners pay 800 yen)
-Shimane Art Museum (Japanese pay 1000 yen, foreigners pay 500 yen)
-Matsue Vogel Park (Japanese pay 1500 yen, foreigners pay 1050 yen)
-Yuushien English Garden (Japanese pay 1500 yen, foreigners pay 1050 yen)
There are two more places that offer these discounts in Izumo and Yasugi city (both nearby, so many people who visit Matsue also visit one or both of these):
-Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo - Izumo City (Japanese pay 600 yen, foreigners pay 300 yen)
-Adachi Museum of Art - Yasugi City (Japanese pay 2200 yen, foreigners pay 1100 yen)
You can do a lot in Matsue for very little, so it's well worth it! Plus the city is so beautiful!
