Travel Tips for Shizuoka

Separation of the two religion........

by cheesecake17

KUNO-ZAN TOSHOGU was ORIGINALLY built in the mixed style of SHINTOISM and BUDDHISM...

But after the Shogunate government came to its end, the NEW government led by the EMPEROR, ordered the separations of the 2 religions and some Buddhist style structures were removed or remodeled...

The remants of the BUDDHIST STYLE can still be seen in various locations.....

For example, The THE DRUM TOWER... This was formerly a BELL-TOWER, but as a result of the prohibition of both workship between BUDDHISM and SHINTOISM, the bell was replaced by a DRUM....

Also.....you can see the vacant lot of what used to be A 5 STORIED PADOGA, which was build on order from the 3rd Shogun Iemitsu(Tokugawa Ieyasu's grandson). At that time, the pagoda was 30m in height but it was pulled down in 1873 for the same reason.....
