The main shrine of KUNO ZAN
This magnificent main shrine was built in GONGEN STYLE, the structure was recently repainted and you can see such vivid colors.
Kunouzan-Toshogu is the origin of the other many toshogu. The same fundamental architectural style was copied by the NIKKO TOSHOGU which was built by the 3rd SHOGUN in 1636..
The interior of the front doors is the sanctuary.....the place down the stairs is caled ISHI NO MA....or stone hall(pic#5).
How KUNOZAN TOSHOGU SHRINE got its name
The shrine was built in 1617 in honour of the 1st Shogun TOKUGAWA IEYASU(1542-1616) He was born in OKAZAKI-castle in 1542 in the age of the civil war in Japan...
With unceasing efforts, he succeeded in bringing the whole country under his sway and made great contributions to peace and culture of Japan today...
In his last days after he retired from Shogunate, he lived in SUMPU castle ...He died in 1616 and was buried at KUNOZAN HILL...according to his will...
The 2nd Shogun TOKUGAWA HIDETADA built the shrine for his father in 1617 in this place...
The sacred tittle TOSHO-DAIGONGEN was granted to Ieyasu by the Imperial court...so the shrine is called KUNOZAN TOSHOGU..
