Seeing Fuji

by kevarms

Hi,
I'll be staying in Shizuoka for one night visiting a friend. I plan to be in Tokyo the following night. Was wondering if it's possible to 'do' Mount Fuji on the way from Shizuoka to Tokyo. Any advice how to go about it ? I don't want to climb it just get some good photos.

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Kevin - Welcome to my real "home" town of Shizuoka! There are many great viewpoint for Mt. Fuji between Shizuoka and Tokyo; a crucial factor, of course, is weather.

If you are staying in the town of Shizuoka, ask your friend to take you up to Nihondaira, which is a plateau east of the city center. The view of Fuji from there is one of the classic views.

Another good view point around Shizuoka is the Miho Beach in Shimizu. This place has a literary fame, as the location of the famous no play "Hagoromo", in which a fisherman steals the robe of a maiden from heaven. (Sometimes an outdoor No performance is held there.)

If you don't mind a little bit of hiking, the summit of Hamaishidake, up from the town of Yui, is a magnificent viewpoint for the mountain.

Finally, you can easily look up the stupendous elevation of the mountain from the sea level, weather permitting, from the shinkansen train as it zaps through the city of Fuji, east of Shizuoka, on the way to Tokyo.

PS: If you want to get a good view / picture of Fuji, it would be better to view it from some distance rather than going halfway up the mountain.

Climate in shizuoka

by cheesecake17

The average annual temperature in Shizuoka is 16.1?‹C and annual precipitation is 2,326mm.

With the exception of the northern mountainous region, the prefecture has a mild maritime climate. Snow is rare on the plains.

We enjoy four distinct seasons.

Spring is mild, the early part of summer is our rainy season, and in the latter half of the summer it becomes hot and sunny. Autumn brings cool fine weather and it is very dry and fine in the winter
