Kinugawa Gyoen: Kinugawa Onsen (Hot Springs)
In Kinugawa, all along the river of the same name sit some of the nicest accomodations in Japan. One of these is the Kinugawa Gyoen. Japanese people flock to these onsen as often as possible to enjoy the fine food and the soothing effects of the hot springs. The rooms are almost all Japanese style, however some western style (with beds) rooms are available. The views from the rooms of the mountains and the river are spectacular, especially in autumn and winter.
The cost is not cheap but when you consider that a fantastic Japanese dinner and a huge breakfast buffet are included in the price, its not too bad....
Although the baths are, in the Japanese tradition, communal this particular Onsen offers private use of one of its larger baths to its guests for 5000 yen per hour. I must tell you that having such a large area just for my wife and myself was wonderful and I recommend paying the extra money for the experience.
