Cheap and tacky ryokan/hotel
I booked a night at this 'Ryokan' hotel hoping for a great Japanese-experience, instead my girlfriend and I were subjected to a cheap-looking, tacky hotel experience and at an expensive-enough price. We had already stayed in a few other, less expensive places on our 3 week travels around Japan and we were really looking forward to experiencing a true Japanese Ryokan but this was not the place to stay for this and fell well short of even the cheapest other places we had stayed in. The decor was tatty, no attention to detail, for the prices they are charging here, you are entitiled to expect better standards of cleanliness and service. Really, very disappointed in this Hotel/Ryokan, puzzled as to how they can get away with chragin such prices and provide such a poor service.
I would strongly advise to look at other alternatives to the Natsukashiya Fuwari as it is simply not up to the basic standard required for even a semi-enjoyable stay, let alone a luxurious, unique experience of Japanese hospitality.
Unique Quality: It's uniqueness is hard to pinpoint - might be the sheer nerve to cahrge such prcies for such poor standard of accommodation. Filthy place smelling of tobacco and very tatty round the edges.
Directions: Too far to walk from Nikko Station - 3km plus with heavy luggage, not that they seemed concerned when being politely informed about this. More information on distance from railway station would be very helpful.
